5,000 Years of the Ridgeway, 8 Miles via Ivinghoe Beacon - Sat 16th March

  • Mar 16, 2013 · 9:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join us as we head to the Chilterns and along the Ridgeway to Ivinghoe Beacon. Our eight mile hike takes in fine open views along the tops before heading through ancient woodland to the Bridgewater Monument. We visit pretty Aldbury and a nice country pub before catching our train back into London from Tring.

The Ridgeway is an ancient trail in use for at least 5,000 years and at one time stretched from the Dorset Coast to the Norfolk Wash. High up on the ridge travellers avoided the wet ground below and we hope to repeat this trick as we make our way from Tring to the Beacon, pictured.

From here we turn towards the Bridgewater Monument, commemorating Francis Egerton the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater: Aristocrat, industrialist and builder of the first true canals. His monument is 108 feet tall with 170 steps inside and sits within the woods of the National Trust's Ashridge Estate.

This is a popular walk and not too far out of London, here are the details:

We'll meet at Euston from 09.45, boarding the 10.24 to Tring arriving at 10.59.

The train fare is £14.40, but if you buy in a group of four on the day then it's half price and your ticket will cost £7.20. Don't worry too much about getting into groups as we will sort it all out on the day.

Remember to bring a picnic lunch to eat on the Ridgeway and there is a chance for a cup of tea and a loo stop at the National Trust Cafe near The Monument.

We will go to the pub in Aldbury, about a mile outside Tring, and we can have a good meal or just a beer if you fancy. For those staying for dinner at the pub it would be a good idea to bring a torch for the short road trip back to the station.

Trains back into town are at 10, 26 and 56 past the hour. If you're in a hurry you could be back at Euston not long after 5pm.

There is a £2 cash charge for this walk. Pay Tom on arrival.

You will also need to bring money for your train fare, food and drinks during the day.

Please note there are risks associated with all outdoor activities. This is an eight mile hike and although we are not one of the fastest groups we ask that you are reasonably fit and have suitable clothing and footwear for the walk. Also please avoid doing anything that would put you or other members of the group in danger. I will post a weather forecast the night before.

Hope you can come

Best wishes

Tom

Hi Tom, really sorry to bail on my first walk but I poked my head out of the door this morning and, because of the weather, swiftly went back inside! Hibernation continues...I'm gutted, had sandwiches made and everything but hope to join you on another walk when the weather is more favourable. Hope you enjoy the Chilterns today.

    See you all tomorrow

Hi Mattie, we will be near the ticket office inside the mainline train station. I will be wearing my lime green hoodie which is quite distinctive and can be seen in my meet up photo. You shouldn't have any trouble spotting us all. See you there!

    Hello

This walk is filling up quickly so please, if you can't make it, remember to change your status and free up the space. I am planning another trip for Easter Saturday, probably to the South Downs and will post it soon.

    Best wishes

Your boots and jacket should be enough for the British weather, but please keep a look out for the weather forecast in case it is is a particularly wet day! Jeans are never good for walking as they take up so much water!
