Join us as we head to the Chilterns and along the Ridgeway to Ivinghoe Beacon. Our nine mile hike takes in fine open views along the tops before heading through ancient woodland to the Bridgewater Monument. We visit pretty Aldbury and a nice country pub before catching our train back into London.
The Ridgeway is an ancient trail in use for at least 5,000 years and at one time stretched from the Dorset Coast to the Norfolk Wash. High up on the ridge travellers avoided the wet ground below and we hope to repeat this trick as we make our way from Tring to the Beacon, pictured.
From here we turn towards the Bridgewater Monument, commemorating Francis Egerton the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater: Aristocrat, industrialist and builder of the first true canals. His monument is 108 feet tall with 170 steps inside and sits within the woods of the National Trust's Ashridge Estate.
This is a popular walk and not too far out of London, here are the details:
We'll meet at Euston from 09.45, our train leaves at 10:24, destination Tring.
Remember to bring a picnic lunch to eat on the Ridgeway and there is a chance for a cup of tea and a loo stop at the National Trust Cafe near The Monument.
We will go to the pub in Aldbury, about a mile outside Tring, and we can have a good meal or just a beer if you fancy. For those staying for dinner at the pub it would be a good idea to bring a torch for the short road trip back to the station.
Trains back into town are at 10, 26 and 56 past the hour. I can't be sure what time the walk will finish as it depends on the speed of the group on the day. Best not to make too many plans for the evening, and just enjoy the hike.
The cost of your trip is £13.50 and includes the guided day-hike and return train ticket from Euston. The payment is a condition of your RSVP and is non-refundable.
You will also need to bring money for your food and drinks during the day.
Please note there are risks associated with all outdoor activities. This is a nine mile hike and we ask that you are reasonably fit and have suitable clothing and footwear for the walk. Carry extra drinking water with your packed lunch. Also, please avoid doing anything that would put you or other members of the group in danger. This walk is not suitable for children or pet dogs. If you are bringing a guest make sure they have read this notice before they agree to join the hike. I will post a weather forecast the night before.
Hope you can come
