Harlem is perhaps New York’s most famous neighborhood and has a very rich history and has also had a great impact on the world! On this walking tour we’ll experience Harlem old and new, from the shopping and hustle and bustle of 125th Street, to the birthplace of be-bop jazz. We will see magnificent and varied architecture, beautiful 19th century townhouses, important historic sites, noted houses of worship and the famed Apollo Theatre. Tour focuses on the South and Central Harlem area, and will also cover four centuries of Harlem History as a center of commerce, culture and activism. As we stroll down the Astor Row Historic District, we can imagine we’re in the American south thanks to the unique homes. We'll experience the Harlem Renaissance of today with the new “restaurant and condo row” on Frederick Douglass Boulevard. We’ll start the tour with gallery exhibits at the Schomburg Center, one of the City’s great cultural and educational treasures. Stick around at the end of the tour and have a soul food lunch or brunch at Sylvia’s or Amy Ruth’s or perhaps the celebrity-chef owned Red Rooster. How about French-African food or a jazz brunch at Harlem Tavern?
To reach our Meetup location by public transportation, take the 2/3 subway to 135th Street. The Schomburg Center is right there, across the Street from Harlem Hospital. As long as the weather is nice we'll meet near the entrance to the Center on Malcolm X Boulevard.
