Celebrate Labor Day with a Walk Across the Williamsburg Bridge!

The Labor Day-themed walk will take us from the Lower East Side across the East River to Williamsburg and perhaps up to historic Greenpoint.  We'll honor this day by exploring New York City's industrial past as lining both sides of the river once stood countless factories (like the former Domino Sugar Factory, being converted to a multi-use development).  It was the lure and promise of employment that brought many immigrants to the City -and we'll talk about this aspect of our history as well -  also recounting NYC's labor movement traditions.  Williamsburg is one of America's most transformed urban neighborhoods - we'll enjoy exploring its past legacy and history along with the recent activity that have made the area a mecca for young people.

Consider bringing a picnic lunch and snacks -- this will be a substantial walk!  There will be options in Williamsburg to pick up something to go or for brunch.

Hank ... thank you. I did walk back via the bridge. Now I am so tired that I need a nap!

Wow, that's impressive and inspiring! I think I will have to devise a few "marathon" meetups for you and the other serious walkers during autumn.

Hank ... it was fun. Though next day muscles that I did not know I have were so sore! But good today. Look forward to the next trip. Thanks again.

Walk was wonderful, nice people, nice shops, knowledgeable guide. Got home before the rain, slept through it, and then went to see "Aida", in Lincoln Center, under a clear, blue sky - a perfect day.
    When is the next tour?

Just woke from a nap, did not realize that I was so tired. Am disappointed to not see a picture and link for Alex who met us on the Brooklyn side. Alex - I hope you "find" me!

I, too, got notice that I was confirmed way too late to attend, which was a great disappointment because I (and my friend) really wanted to! Hope you schedule this again, Hank, and maybe next time you can make the start time LATER so the trip can end with an optional DINNER in Williamsburg - or the Lower East Side?!

Rethinking this! Perhaps I could meet the group and walk across the bridge. Let me know what time and where to meet the group at the bridge. Thanks!

Yay - woke up this morning to find that I had been moved off the wait list to the "Yes" column - I think this is a go - rain is not expected until much later today -we should be fine and dry!

Can I hook up with the group, in Brooklyn?
    Where?
    When?

    September 1, 2013

    • Hank O.

Sure - after the bridge walk we'll be heading South first and then North so you if you can be on the Brooklyn side of the Williamsburg bridge around 10:45/11:00am. Call me at[masked]-3005. If you be at the starting point the experience will be more meaningful as the bridge walk is one of the highlights and has historical significance.

Per the e-mail you sent today, I would be very interested in taking short walks should you decide to offer them. I enjoy walking and exploring but am physically unable to walk for 2 or 3 hours at a time.

Why is the Tenement Museum indicated at the top of the page, when there is no mention of it in the description of the walk?

    August 23, 2013

    • Hank O.

It's good meeting place on Delancey Street as the Williamsburg Bridge entrance is a few blocks away. I will speak about the connections between the Lower East and Williamsburg.
