Exploring the West Village on a Friday Afternoon!

Everyone loves the West Village, with its old buildings, irregular street pattern, varied nightlife, and fun shops, but what a cool and fascinating history it has!  The story of the Village is filled with literary, theatrical and historic figures, beatnicks, political radicals and folkies, along with a strong independent spirit even from its most ordinary residents. The Village is where social movements and creative expression has truly had an impact on the world!  Stops include Stonewalls, celebrity hangouts, the narrowest house in NYC,  hidden streets, the site of a prison, a country church, and what is still likely the world's largest artist colony.  We'll end our walk in the Gansevoort Meatpacking District, which has its own interesting history, a perfect place for a drink or a bite after our stroll!

O, West Village, your bricks and stones speak loudly of bygone days, of your vibrancy, your energy and your past souls. I long for your trains and factories, your warehouses and seaport filled with tall masted ships calling on ports around the world, your artists and writers. Live, West Village, and be great again!!!!!

I had to drop out a bit early with sore feet and a sore back (started he tour a few hours earlier o the high line), but I came home, soaked my feet, iced my back and felt like a happy camper!

that'll teach me... an hour into the walk i went to make a very quick restroom stop and returned moments later to find the group gone... nowhere in sight :( not sure how i lost you but it was when you were across the street from the library. oh well, i certainly enjoyed the first hour with Hank's vivid description of washington square park, the puppet show and the 300 year old tree. i love the west village so hopefully i can try again next time. as always, Hank's walks are the best-thank you so much hank- and I hope you all had fun.

totally bummed - i made an appt for tomorrow afternoon and dont think i can make it downtown by 4PM - is there any way to publish the wait list so people can see their position on it to know if they have a good chance or not of actually getting on the 'yes" list ???

have fun and hope to catch you next time

How does the waiting list work? Can the waitig list ppl form a second group?

    1 · September 25, 2013

    • Hank O.

The waiting list is automatic. When people change their RSVP status to not not going the next person on the waiting list can attend. Sometimes I repeat a meetup if there is a long waiting list - and I register the waiting list people for that date who then need to see if that works for them.
