Walking Tour of Gramercy Park and The Flatiron District!

Repeating by popular demand! This unique walk is filled with architectural treasures, including the Flatiron Building, Metropolitan Life, the Victorian-era department stores of the Ladies Mile Historic District, Theodore Roosevelt's birthplace (his birthday is October 27th) and a rejuvenated Madison Square Park where you will hear the story of Stanford White, the famous architect who was shot and killed in 1906 at Madison Square Garden--one of his own design creations.  The tour includes a stroll around the beautiful Gramercy Park neighborhood with a storied past all of its own. We will also stop by the home of America’s first interior decorator and a 19th century New Yorker who ran for President, won the popular vote but lost the election!

Walk ends in Union Square, where there are plenty of options for socializing afterwards and/or shopping at the Greenmarket.

The tour was terrific and Hank's performing the different character's lines from The Wizard of Oz was a laugh-out-loud delight. What a great day!

Thanks, Hank--really enjoyed the tour and learning about the origins of 23 skiddoo and "Would you like to come up and see my etchings?"

I just received notification that I was on the Yes list, but I'm unable to go, because it already started. I don't want anyone to think I would be a no-show.

It is Sat. morning and I was just informed that I made it off the wait list. However, I have made other plans so my spot is open. I cancelled the RSVP.

Hi Hank et al, You will be in my hood on this meetup so I may get to see you all at some point and say hi. Have a great time. I live in a fun neighborhood - I'm sure all will enjoy.

Just reminding people that the start time today is 12 noon (originally 2:00pm, changed over a week ago). There's a Starbucks on 23rd Street between 5th & 6th Avenue and also Eataly for coffee/restrooms near the northwest corner of 23rd Street & 5th Avenue. Our meetup location is on the side of the Flatiron Building (south side of 23rd Street) - where there usually a few tables and chairs.

I do NOT have an iPhone but made it to this list. Hank does these tours often enough for you to be able to eventually get on a tour. Also, since I have been on a few of Hank's tours I have intentionally made sure that lately I do not accept as often knowing that there are others that want to get on his tours even for tours that I haven't been on myself. I know I am not the only one in this group who is considerate enough to do the same. Hang in there.

Thanks, and most of this group seems to share your thoughtfulness..The iPhone thread is just a bit tongue-in-cheek...Kind of funny to think of a Hank Tour announcement simultaneously buzzing on phones all over town!

I don't like being "wait listed" any more than I do standing in line for tickets or anything else with limited availability, but that's the way it for most things that are desirable.

I think Hank is doing an exceptional job of trying to understand and accommodate the needs, interests and concerns of group members and he deserves a great deal of credit for doing so. Those who think the "wait lists" are long HERE should check out some of the other groups on this site: I'm a member of the Google Meetup Group and though it allows 250 people at its events there are nearly 10,000 members in that group- and its waiting lists make ours look miniscule! Nonetheless, the group continues to grow and its members continue to queue up for activities, because that's what's required to be in the running and it doesn't take any effort to do so.

WAIT LISTS ARE A FACT OF MEETUP (and much of the rest of) LIFE - if Google can't change that why should we expect Hank to?

i just removed myself from the wait list because i made other plans for tomorrow - hopefully others will do the same so that those who are on the wait list (and are waiting for their RSVP to change) may actually move up on the list and become a "yes" - have fun everyone

    1 · October 25, 2013

I would love to do this tour, but it is not worth being on a wait list that is longer than the actual list of people who are attending.

Sorry, can't make it.... Welcome next person on waiting list!:)

Unfortunately, the time change won't work for me but judging from the long waiting list, it shouldn't be a problem filling my spot!

I am next on the waiting list.. not that I want someone to drop out........... but I am so excited........ its like Thanksgiving, Christmas and my birthday all in one... just waiting for that email that says I am in................. sorry for the one who would not be able to go..........we shall see meanwhile, have a great evening ..........................

    October 21, 2013

  • Elizabeth

Hank, Glad to hear that you will be repeating your tours and holding them throughout the winter. I really would like to go on several of the tours and haven't managed to get on the list! I don't know what the secret is to getting on the list.... I don't watch my phone obsessively, so I don't seem to see the tours until it is too late. I will keep trying!

    1 · October 21, 2013

  • annE

i often notice that spaces open up last minute when people change their RSVP very close to the event date - many times i've seen posts from people who get ON the list last minute, things like "oh i wish i knew a little sooner because i made other plans for that date since there was such a long wait list" or "it's 2 hours before the event and i just got an Email that i can't get there in time" - it would help a GREAT deal if people would update their RSVP more diligently - and if you're on the wait list and have made other plans for that date, please take your name off the wait list so others can move up faster on the list and have the opportunity to go - if we are all a little more aware of updating the list it might help

I have an idea (although doing this would mean extra administrative work for Hank): if people have already been on one of the walks, allow someone who hasn't to go instead. In one of my professional organizations this is done for popular events. That way, people who consistently get closed out can have a chance to go.

    3 · October 21, 2013

  • Rubi

Thanks Hank - for those of use without smartphones, by the time we see the invitational email, the waiting list is already huge. Perhaps people who have already done the activity won't sign up again.

Judging by the size of the wait list, and what i'm hearing about Hank, this is an event I'd love to be a part of! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Well Peggy, you seem like my kinda gal! :-) I would love to meet you and become friends exploring the city on our own (or at least until we can actually make it into one of Hank's tour groups). I too am currently on 3 of his waiting lists! Let me know. I'm game for anything fun to do in the city! Enjoy the rest of your weekend. :-)

I'd hate to think of our meet-ups ending anytime soon because I LOVE this group and think that it - and our organizer, Hank - is truly the BEST but I really don't think we have to worry about there being no more tours after November, because Hank just recently mentioned that he IS planning trips for the winter months. As I recall, Hank said that he's thinking of organizing his "Winter Tours" as shorter outdoor walks combined with visits to offbeat museums and other interesting venues - which sounds perfect to me!

Nonetheless, I don't think it would hurt to contact Hank directly to let him know that you enjoy his tours and would really like to see them continued through the winter months (and beyond)! Everyone likes to be appreciated and we can all use encouragement

Seems like your tours are super cool because I can't ever get in other than on the Waiting List! Don't you have a clone out there somewhere that could lead the tour for us Waiting Listers? There are more of us than on the actual tour! Congratulations on the success of your group and, unless that clone shows up, I guess I'll just have to keep trying. And to those of you who made it onto the list, have a truly wonderful time. :-)
