Exploring Sunset Park and Greenwood Heights, Brooklyn

These diverse neighborhoods are refreshing change of pace from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan and the more popular Brooklyn neighborhoods.  Once home to the Canarsee Indians and then the Dutch in the 1600's, the area was  been settled by Italian, Irish and Scandanavians in the 1800's with Italian immigrants arriving around 1900. Nowadays the area has vibrant Latin American and Chinese communities and we'll end our walk in Brooklyn's Chinatown and take in some local cuisine.  Along our journey we'll see some distinctive urban housing, views from atop Sunset Park, and a bit of the extraordinary Greenwood Cemetery, the final resting place of countless luminaries including Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Morse, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Henry Steinway (founder of the piano company), Mabel Smith Douglass, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.  Note this meetup entails a fair amount of walking, a good 3 miles.

Donations of your choice of $1, $3 or $5 will be collected at the beginning of the meetup.

Great walk. Hank is an informative and detailed leader and the group members were friendly. Having lunch after the walk was a nice, social experience. I'm glad I attended both parts of the tour.

Reminders for Saturday, try to bring cash if you are joining the group for dim sum or lunch at Pacificana Restaurant at the end of our walk. Also wear comfortable shoes as there is some uphill walking. Thanks!

Hank, I believe that Greenwood Cemetery requires a $5 per person donation from groups of 10 or more people who are touring their grounds. That has been the policy on past walks I have done there.

Thanks John, I appreciate the information. I am not planning to actually visit the cemetery, which deserves its own 2 hour (or more) tour. We will pass by the grand entrance and see some of it from the outside along the perimeter.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
