Hank's Harlem Happening: Soul Food, Live Music and Guided Tour!

This is a really cool way to kickoff the week!  First we'll enjoy a one hour walking tour to get oriented to Harlem's rich history, we'll at stop briefly by Minton's Uptown Playhouse, the birthplace of be-bebop jazz in the 1940's (newly re-opened), stroll through "Little Senegal" and up magnificent Malcolm X Boulevard and enjoy a Soul Food dinner at Sylvia's famous soul food restaurant -- open since 1962. We'll then invade the very hot and happening Red Rooster for some live music (no cover). Depending on the scene, the mood (and your energy) we may move on to another live music venue  such as Shrine or Paris Blues (all no cover charge).

Link to Sylvia's for their menu and Red Rooster for the music:

If you have been on a previous Harlem tour with our group that has covered this part of the neighborhood please consider giving others a chance!  Please try to bring cash for the restaurant as there will be one bill for the group and there may be a limit on the # of credit cards accepted.

Thanks so much!

Hank

I am so sorry that I missed everyone, I was really looking forward to spending an evening in Harlem, but when I finally got to Harlem it was 7pm and my cell phone was not working so I decided to take the train back to Brooklyn

Enjoyable evening, and I learned a lot about an area that was mostly new to me. Thanks, Hank!

For the record - I personally NEVER received an email advising me that I was moved from the Waiting List to Confirmed and wound up missing an evening I would have loved to be part of!

I was NOT - and am not - a "No Show"! I definitely WOULD have gone to this had I been informed that my status had changed, but I wasn't. I don't know why or how this happened but hope Hank will look into - and resolve - this so it won't be an ongoing issue.

Meetup can be buggy sometimes, plus even when emails go where they should, there is often a delay. I find it helps to keep an eye on the event page itself, if I'm high up on a waiting list and still hoping to get in.

With the struggle to get onto these tour lists so tight, and, according to posted comments, there being such disappointment from those having to be "wait listed", it's always amazing that some people keep "no showing". Is it possible for wait-listed people to take their names off the list so when late openings occur, those waiting are actually available? When I know it's too improbable, and I won't have time to check further, I take my name off the List.

As per the No Shows, that's up to Hank to decide. But note that as it gets cold, like tonite, it is not fair to keep so many people waiting for late-comers who didn't have the courtesy to notify Hank they weren't even coming. Just makes it easier for everyone.
PS = they missed a wonderful evening in Harlem!

I agree but also want to point out that at least one of us - ME - never got an email saying they were CONFIRMED and I checked my email numerous times yesterday up until late in the day when I was no longer able to. I am scrupulous about checking all folders - including "spam" and "trash" and KNOW that I never received a confirmation and only when I got the "Stay in Touch" notice last night at 11 p.m. did I find out that I was confirmed. I KNOW how wonderful all Hank's tours are and DEFINITELY would have attended this IF I had received a confirmation email! Don't know what happened but hope it never happens again!

It's too bad you missed all that "healthy" soul food, and a tasty tour. But we'll just work together to assure everyone gets a good chance for each of Hank's WonderWalks!

Hi Edith, I checked the waiting list and you are pretty far down, over 30 people ahead of you. I expect to have plenty of other Harlem meet ups and tours including for newer members like you.

How do I find out where I am on Waiting List ?

    November 3, 2013

  • tanya

I will be significantly LATE for THE WALK and therefore changing my status. Would have really loved to hold on to my RSVP for Sylvia--always wanted to eat there- but perhaps I 'll meet you all there and share the Rooster part of the experience. :-)
Oof, this was a hard decision.

    1 · November 3, 2013

  • Hank O.

Reminding attendees that dinner at Sylvia's is part of the experience so if you not planning to have dinner with group please change your RSVP status or contact me if you would still like to come on the walk. The restaurant has a group limit of 20 people. Try and bring cash. There will be ATM's along our walking route.

    Thanks!!
