New River Gorge Bridge

We're headed to West Virginia to photograph the New River Gorge Bridge, the longest steel-span in the Western Hemisphere and 2nd highest in the U.S. We'll use the Canyon Rim Boardwalk to get close, the Bridge Trail to go under the bridge, and Long Point Trail to get a panoramic view. There should be white water rafts in the New River in the early afternoon. In the quaint town of Fayetteville, there are also photo opportunities and a great pizza place, Pies and Pints, that has been featured on The Food Network. There are other options for eating, including fast food or brown bagging it. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

For information about the hikes: www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/nrgbridge.htm (Hiking-Fayetteville Area Trails.)

There is also a bridge catwalk tour. This is not part of our meetup, but for individuals who might want this experience here is the link to information about it. http://www.bridgewalk.com/Tour-Information/tour-information.html

Roanoke area folks meet in the Salem WalMart parking lot on the left side close to the road at 8:00AM. We'll meet the New River Valley folks at the Park 'n Ride Exit 118B at 8:45AM. From Roanoke, it's about 3 hours to the bridge. If you would rather meet us there, we'll plan to be at the parking lot of the Canyon Rim Visitors' Center on U.S. Route 19, just north of Fayetteville, WV. around 11:30. There are tolls- $2.00 and .40.

It was my first meetup with you all, and it was great! Excellent planning by Sandra! Can't wait to go on another hike/talk/shoot with the group!

The Kaymoor Mine Trail is No Country For Old Men. The 850 steps is the easy part, the rest is VERY strenuous rocks and roots, all made very slippery today by the rain. I fell 6 times going down, nothing hurt but my bottom, but ran into a nest of ground wasps at the bottom, got stung maybe 10 times, some of them through my blue jeans. Then back near the top, at total exhaustion, I took a header down a 5 foot trail drop, landed on head and shoulders. A bump and cut on the head, numerous bad abrasions on arms and shoulders, wrenched neck, banged up ribs, covered in black mud and lost my glasses for about 5 minutes. Help arrived in the form of one of the Ohio rock climbers who happened upon me, helped clean up the head injury and then stayed with me most of the way back to the car.

Sadly, even getting down to the bottom was so hard I was exhausted, and a lot of my handheld shots are shaky and no good. Plus I was dripping wet, which made pinhole shooting tough. But I'm glad I went!

Andy, so sorry to hear about your mishaps and hope that you're on the mend. Didn't hear anything about the equipment so I'm assuming that you intentionally sacrificed your body to safe keep the camera gear safe. Anybody able to capture this adventure in pics or video for a tell all at our next meetup?

      August 18, 2013

    • Jan M.

Wow Andy, so glad you're ok! I saw your shots and thought, gee, I should take that trail someday soon...now I'm thinking, maybe not!

      August 19, 2013

  • Andy C.

I just posted 2 very disappointing shots. Soft and/or camera shake. Too tired to pay attention.

For those who wanted to see, I posted a couple of Nikon D7000 / Panny FZ200 comparisons. Not exactly apples with apples, but some idea.

Well, I had a great time too. Many thanks to everyone especially Sandra who is a wonderfully organized planner (our Mom). It was one of those days that will live in memory and great pizza too!

Thanks also to Curt, BTW. And to everyone who provided such good companionship, sharing stories and photos, etc. in general, just a fine way to spend a fall-like day.

Great meetup! This was the first one I was able to attend, and my husband and I had a great time. We got some great pics of the bridge, met some great people, and spotted a copperhead! The pizza was great too! Perfect day!

    Sandra,
You out did yourself with this event. Prior to leaving this morning, I had second thoughts about going. Long story, short, I'm glad I went. THANK YOU. Also, it was great seeing each and everyone of you.

I can't make this one, gonna miss it, have fun.

Can anyone tell me how difficult the Bridge Trail is? That is to say, is it a lot of rock climbing?

    August 13, 2013

    • Adele H.

Would a walking stick be recommended/helpful?

      August 16, 2013

    • Sandra W.

There is another option to get below the bridge--driving the Fayette Station Road. I'll have directions.

      August 16, 2013

  • Dawnita H.

Had a last minute meeting come up for tomorrow morning so I will have to bow out.

    August 16, 2013

  • Adele H.

Does someone have room in their car I can ride with? I will pitch in for gas. Never been to WV so would prefer to ride with someone more familiar with the directions.

    August 16, 2013

    • Angelina T.

I have room in my car if you still need a ride. let me know tonight so I can plan to meet in Salem. otherwise I am driving straight to the bridge.

I am in Newport. If some of the B'burg folks want to drive to Newport we can carpool from there. I can drive if needed or if someone has a spot in their car you can pick me up. I am on the way to the Wild and Wonderful, WVA!

    August 11, 2013

    • Sandra W.

Do you still need someone to pick you up in Newport?

      August 15, 2013

  • June -.

    No cat walk for me.

    August 15, 2013

  • Andy C.

I'm planning to try and walk the 850 steps down to the old, abandoned facility. Don't know if that means under the bridge or not.

    August 15, 2013

    • Sandra W.

I meant the Bridge Cat Walk, which is a paid tour that will need to be booked separately (see original post).

      August 15, 2013

    • Andy C.

      Probably not, thanks.

      August 15, 2013

Damon and I will meet y'all at Salem Wal-Mart. Can drive and take 2 or will be happy to share cost for ride. We're in for Pies and Pints.

    1 · August 15, 2013

I plan to meet at the bridge visitor, due to slight early morning scheduling conflict here in Roanoke. I do plan on making Pies and Pints.

Same here. I'll be meeting group at park and ride and have room for 3.

    August 15, 2013

I'm driving and have room for 2 more. I think we can work out the carpooling when we get to the Park and Ride.

I'd love to carpool with people from Nrv and since my car has been acting funny, hitching a ride may be the only way i can come! Seems like a fun trip!

Hmm... Just realized that I need to quickly replace my hiking boots and have a chance to break them in a bit before Saturday. Anyone have suggestions on where to find nice sturdy leather hiking boots in the Roanoke area? Thanks in advance.

My favorite outdoor store is " Back Country Outfitters" on Apperson Dr. in Salem. Pricey but knowledgeable staff and quality gear.

      1 · August 12, 2013

    • Mike Y.

Tracy, Outdoor Trails in Daleville has a good selection. If you're a member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, they will discount 10%. I "think" they also discount to the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club members as well.

Do you need a ride? I may be picking up Dawnita in Cburg.

      August 12, 2013

June, I had to bow out, as much as I wanna to go, because of a wedding I gotta go. Thanks for offering the ride.

      August 12, 2013

  • Dawnita H.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Anyone willing to give me a ride from the Radford/Blacksburg/Christiansburg metroplex? I will cover the gas and the tolls.

    July 19, 2013

    • June -.

I'd be glad to...but may have conflict which would change my ability to go. If you get more firm offer, take it and let me know. I'll know earlier in the week prior to event.

      July 25, 2013

    • June -.

Dawnita, do you still need a ride? If so, I can pick you up...just tell me where the metroplex is. I'll be coming from Floyd.

      August 12, 2013

  • Andy C.

Maybe I'll just BASE jump and shoot it on the way down. Well, maybe not. I'd need to get a parachute first.

    August 12, 2013

  • Rose Mary C.

May actually be there the day before.

    August 8, 2013

  • Brenda B.

I would like to bring a guest that day and will drive my own car.
