Apple Day at Douthat State Park

Enjoy games, hay rides, bluegrass music and great food, and observe apple butter making, pelt displays, campfire cooking, clogging, and traditional Appalachian artisan and craft demonstrations.

Photo opportunities abound at the craft area and hiking and photo opportunities from Easy (circuit hike around the lake) to moderate (hike to Blue Suck Falls and other lake overlooks) to Strenuous (Lookout Rock and the Middle Mountain Trail).  Something for everyone!

There is a $3 parking fee to enter the park. If you would like to carpool, we will meet at the Daleville Park and Ride at 9:00. Please let me know to expect you there.

I loved this meet-up! Beautiful day, great things to photograph, good food, and a ride around the lake on a hydrobike! Had never seen one, so had to try it...a bicycle frame with pontoons attached...3 of us pedaled our way around the lake! Such fun! Thanks, Sandra for organizing this wonderful meet-up!

Damp cloudy weather didn't dampen our intrepid group of photographers. Great shots, great company, great day!

Interesting things to see at Douthat. One unexpected thing was Jon in an apron with animal hides around him! Five of us left Douthat in search of a waterfall--found it AND a swinging bridge, mountains with fog and sunshine, beautiful back roads. Thanks everybody for making it a special day!

Thanks, Sandra, for organizing this. I have always wanted to check out Douthat Park so this was the perfect reason to go! It was nice seeing everyone! I will likely make Apple Day an annual go-to event on my calendar!

Take the 2nd exit after the truck weigh station on I81 toward Fincastle. After you wind around and pass under the interstate bridge, look for the Exxon station on your left. The Park-n-Ride is to the left of it.

My car is usually very hard to start on wet or even damp mornings, so I may be late, but I'll be there.

We'll be coming through WV, so we'll try to get to the Visitor's Center by 10:00 AM...if we're not there at 10, don't wait, we'll find you all when we arrive!

Are we to meet at the Visitors' Center at 10am if not carpooling?

I may make a weekend out of it and stay for 2 nights. I will let you know what my plans are. If I don't I will definitely want to carpool.

The event goes until 5, but the carpoolers can choose when to return. We'll see who is interested in riding together and try to come to a consensus before that morning.

If we carpool from Daleville Park, what is the anticipated time of returning?
