A Peaks of Otter Outing (part two)

In part two, we'll go to the summit of Sharp Top Mountain. 3875 foot elevation with a magnificent 360 degree panoramic view.  On a clear day it's possible to see Smith Mountain Lake, Bedford area, the Peaks Lodge and Abbot Lake nestled at the base of the mountain.

There is a bus ride that brings you close to the summit and reduces the walk to a mere few hundred feet. We will catch the 2:00 bus (unless you choose to hike up), which costs $5 for one way or $8 for a round trip. After the great shots at the top, we will hike down the mountain ( 1.5 miles ) pausing for photos along the way or you can ride the bus back down and do more photography at the bottom.

We will join back together for dinner at the Peaks of Otter Lodge or other place to be determined.

After our meal, we'll head to the Parkway overlook and set up to photograph the moonrise at 7:48, getting shots of the night sky and Sharp Top, also.

Long delightful day. If this was not the best for me, it really ranked one of the very best!

Top notch photographers and equally top notch companions, whether on the top of the mountain, by the lake, or on the side of the road. It's amazing how fast a meal can be over when there are reflections on the water!

This meetup was MORE than spectacular - it was TWO spectaculars -one to the MOUNTAIN and one to the MOON on a beautiful day on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Thanks for setting it up Sandra!

Thanks, Mike. Still planning on the 2:00 bus up and hiking down for those who want to go together. Right now it looks like it will be good for the night shooting, too.

I spoke with the folks at the Peaks of Otter Lodge [masked]) a few minutes ago. They assured me the bus is operational, one must purchase the ticket from the country store, and the first trip will leave out at 10am

Looks like we'll be heading to the Peaks! I will double check to make sure that the bus will be running.

We have a couple of options if the shutdown continues:
Go to the Peaks and hike Sharp Top (no bus service) or shoot other areas like Johnson Farm, Abbott Lake that were covered in Part 1 (in the rain and fog). Then, weather permitting, shoot the rising Hunter's moon.
Go to Paint Bank to photograph buffalo, a mill, eat at the Swinging Bridge restaurant, hike the ridge of Potts Mountain (easy hike; great views but requires some rock scaling) and/or go to Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory (more strenuous hike).

One of these could be shifted to Oct. 26 or 27.

Let me know how you feel!

Sharyn, the observatory would be an add-on for those interested. I was looking for a good place for night shots. What do you think? I've never been there.

With a clear sky the tower is awesome, however I would suggest instead of a mile up hill then back down in the dark that the group head to moncove lake which is just about 20 minutes past gap mills and on route 3. if you are going to paint bank, then it's just keep on trucking to moncove. There will be a moon rise if the sky is clear, and the moonrise over Moncove is pretty darned awesome....

As of last weekend shuttle was down but all trails are open.

I live in Northern Va and they have closed everything and access to those sights. Some tourists have been going over the barricades to access the sights here in Washington, DC.

I'm wondering if the shuttle service to the summit has ceased due to the shut down.
