Night time Photography at The National D-Day Memorial (MEETUP CANCELLED)

  • The National D-Day Memorial

    Overlord Circle, Bedford, VA (map)

  • Would you like to sharpen your night time photography skills? I know mine could use some work. How about joining me in this event.

The National D Day Memorial will have their annual luminary event on 12/14. Also it will be another opportunity to take photos at night. In the past, they have had volunteers dressing up in "then present day uniforms" Also, in the past, this event has been free to the public. If for some reason there is a change, I will let you all know.

I thought I saw you at one point but the light was so low that I couldn't tell and I didn't want to freak out some stranger by walking up and saying "Do I know you?"

I cheated & went Friday night to beat the weather. This is well worth the effort if the weather doesn't get bad. Be prepared to exercise all your night shooting skills! The luminaries are lit by LED tea lights ... don't seem as bright as a real candle (but at least the don't go up in flames). This is a real low light situation (very little ambient light unless the moon is out). Make sure to bring a small light so you can see your camera to make adjustments (like reading the focus distance you are setting on your lens). Sculptures are not lit so you may want to do a little light painting.

I sent out a group email to those who RSVP'd In the interest of having a good meetup, as well as, having a good experience. I have moved this meet up to Sunday Evening. Should you still decide to go, I would call the D Day Memorial at[masked] or[masked] to see if the Luminary Event is still being held. Also, in case if it does happen tomorrow night, I will be unable to attend, due to work.

Since I live very close I also went down there last night. I spoke to the grounds director about the inclement weather forecast for today. He said that since there are over 4000 paper bags with little electric candles in them, the lady in charge had already (as of friday night) sent out a directive that if it rains or snows that this might be a one night event. What he was saying is that they had no intention of putting out over 4000 more paper bags to replace wet bags. If they cancel it, and it has been sleeting and now raining here for several hours, I don't think they are going to have it on Sunday either.

I got a feeling that its an opportunity missed with the weather if you didn't get a chance to go Friday night.

Darn Byron, and Steve , I didn't see you guys there last night.

What decision has been made in regards to the weather?

    December 14, 2013

    • Jon B.

I just called the memorial and they said that right now no decision has been made on if the service is cancelled or not, but they expect something official by 4pm.

Any chance we can move this to Sunday? Looks like we are having a chance of rain or some type of weather into the night, but Sunday is looking dry so I may wait and go on Sunday evening

    Quick note
There is a chance rain/Snow on Saturday. Should this happen. I suggest we cancel for obvious reasons. We should know by noon, Saturday, if the event will be held, or not. If I learn of anything, before then. I will pass it on

This crowd is larger than I anticipated, a good thing. For those who plan to arrive at/around 6pm. How about we meet at the "Overlord" Arch. If you're not familar with the grounds, it is the tallest structure on the grounds. Hope to see y'all there.

I just shot the D-Day the other day and picked up a flyer on the luminary presentation. It says that admission is free during the luminary display. It also says that it's Fri, Sat, and Sunday
Dec 13,14,15, from 6-10pm. So those that cant make it Saturday...I know, I know, you'll be missing the camaraderie of the Meetup, can maybe still catch some shots on another night.

Recently, I've had a few folks ask about this event and the significance of it. As many of us know, The Memorial is usually closed at night. However it is opened for, and on, special occasions. On this occasion, they are honoring the 4000+ who never made it home. I am enclosing a link that will explain further. Please note, this is not an attempt from me to solicit. http://www.dday.org/support-remember-thier-sacrifice/purchase-a-luminary
