Roller Derby Photo Shoot

We'll be traveling to Bluefield, WV to do creative individual and team photos for a roller derby team. Similar to the model shoot we did, we'll be trading photos for the opportunity to learn, practice, and get some awesome portfolio shots. It's about a 2 hour drive each way, so plan to leave early and get home late afternoon/evening. Everyone is welcome, but we'll need firm commitments to work out the carpooling. If you'd like to carpool, be at the park and ride at the 140 exit off I-81 at 7:50. If you need help finding it or want to meet along the way, call/text me:[masked] This is going to be serious fun. :)

PS: Thanks! Sock Monkey is all about his fans!

I have some others too. I'll send them all to Jon for you.

I loved the sock monkey in the skate! We'd like to use it on recruitment flyers :)

Lots of photographic challenges! I had a great time and enjoyed meeting the Green Valley Roller Girls. I hope we get to see them again soon. The casserole was great. Thanks to Sonic Wave who made sure I got enough to eat! I especially enjoyed hanging out with the other members, it is a great opportunity to share and learn.

That's fine! You can email them to me ([masked]) or put them somewhere I can download them. (Is that counting Sock Monkey in a skate?) :D

    I only have about 8.... :(

    January 24, 2011

If you have a bunch of photos to send, I'd prefer them on a CD. You can either mail it to me or give it to me at one of the next meetups.

  • Jaime

Jon, how do you want us to get the photos to you/the team?

    January 24, 2011

  • tj w.

I would like some coaching with my Lightroom work flow for this type of shoot. My sport photo mind set "adjust color, exposure, chop and upload" is leaving some flaws. Sport photo was perishable and speed is key. I really didn't see this, in my work. I'm thankful for feedback to help improve my work. I'm going to revisit this set.

Thanks Jon for all your help & organizing this event. Just to make sure everyone knows, any pics we post to our website will list the photographer's name & if you want we will also provide a link to your website/flikr account, etc. The girls are very excited and grateful to you all for taking the time to come down & shoot them. Thanks again...hugs!!!

I really like what I've seen so far! Just to throw a goal out there for turnaround time, I'd like to be able to send them photos in a couple of weeks. Please plan to send me edited/final .jpg versions on a CD and I'll send them on to the team so they only have to deal with one point of contact.

Thanks again and let me know if you have any questions or need help!

A lot of fun. I wish I had more lighting equipment though.

Hi all, just wanted to say thanks again for coming out, the girls absolutely loved the shoot. Everyone had a wonderful time and we hope you all enjoyed yourselves as well. Curt, I hope that casserole was to your liking. We are excited to see the pictures. THANKS again. Hope to see you in April for the scrimmage; there will be awesome opportunities for action shots. I will post the details as I get them. It is called the Post Tax Smacks, hosted by Star City Roller Girls on April 17th.

    January 22, 2011

  • Kim J.

If there's room, I would like to ride with someone, but either way is fine, sorry didn't see the last part of the post last night

    January 22, 2011

  • Kim J.

Ok, sounds good, see you there.

    January 21, 2011

  • Jon B.

@Kim - There's a Holiday Inn on Price's Fork Rd. that we'll be going by at about 8:30 on the way to pick up Rami. Link: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Cracker+Barrel&aq=0&sll=37.134182,-80.366943&sspn=0.013805,0.033023&ie=UTF8&hq=Cracker+Barrel&hnear=&ll=37.232609,-80.432534&spn=0.003447,0.008256&t=h&z=18

Did you want a ride with someone or did you just want to be part of the convoy?

  • Kim J.

I'm coming from the Riner area, where would be a good spot to meet the group and what time?

    January 21, 2011

  • Jon B.

The carpool group is going to stop and pick up Rami at about 8:35 on the way. He lives in McBryde which is just off 460 in Blacksburg.

    January 21, 2011

  • Jon B.

Great! Shouldn't be a problem finding you. :)

    January 19, 2011

  • Sonic W.

@ Jon it's an easy drive to the rink. When you get to Princeton on 460 you will turn right onto Airport Rd. (just past a Go-Mart) there will be a stop sign & you will turn left. About 1 1/2 mi the road will fork, you will yield right onto Airport Rd., the rink is on the left about 1/10 of a mile.
@ Curt, we might have to take some pics of you eating, sounds like it might be entertaining all on it's own :)

    January 19, 2011

  • James D.

Ok guys I still on planning on seeing you there. As far as setup is concerned I have 1 speedlight (maybe 2 if my 2nd one gets here in time) and couple of umbrellas (shoot-through and reflective).

Anybody got any ideas or concepts for the shoot?

    January 19, 2011

  • Jon B.

According to Google, it's pretty much just 81 to catch 460 in Blacksburg and stay on that for 60 miles. Total time from the 140 park and ride is about 1:45.

If you want to carpool, plan to be at the 140 park and ride by 7:50. I'll put this on the event so it doesn't get lost in the discussion. :)

    January 18, 2011

  • Jaime

@Jon, Thanks! When my models are as cute as Sock Monkey and Flamingo, it is hard to go wrong. ;-)

@Curt, I appreciate that! And we will see which of us can make breakfast disappear faster!

    January 18, 2011

  • Curt W.

@Jon, have you SEEN me make breakfast disappear?

@Jaime - Since you are a Canon shooter, you are welcome to try out any of my lighting equipment if you like.

    January 18, 2011

  • Jon B.

@Curt - Making breakfast disappear isn't a magic trick. ;) I like your plan though! No doubt there will be some awesome shots from this.

@Jaime - Not at all. Watch and learn from Curt and some of the others who shoot a lot of people. And if you apply the same creativity and talent I'm seeing in your Flickr stream, I have no doubt some of the day's best shots will come from you. :)

    January 18, 2011

  • Curt W.

No experience is not a problem Jaime. This shoot is about getting experience, both for us, and the Roller Girls. It'll be fun, and a great chance to experiment and practice. I'm looking forward to learning a thing or two from some of the other members, and to trying some new ideas of my own.

    1 · January 18, 2011

  • Jaime

I don't have a lot of portrait experience. Is that going to be a problem?

    January 18, 2011

  • Curt W.

Jud, my setup is very portable. I use 3 speedlites and an assortment of modifiers including stand mounted umbrellas, softboxes, reflectors, diffusers, etc. My plan is to show up, eat, and make some magic happen in the time we have available. Whatever happens, happens. I think it will be a lot of fun!

    January 18, 2011

  • Jon B.

We're still around. :) Time to start planning where we're going to meet and carpool from.

    January 17, 2011

  • Sonic W.

She will love that. She's one of our jammers & is very fast.
It has been pretty quiet, lol. There is an up-side though, if we're the only one's we'll have plety to eat :)

    January 17, 2011

  • Sonic W.

Hey Jud, I've asked the girls about concepts they might have. Most are bring props and/or individual items. Example: one of our girls is called ChaCha Slam Her & she will be yielding a baseball bat, lol. As far as a group concept we do not have one. We are very excited for Saturday, see you all soon.

    January 17, 2011

  • Sonic W.

Jud-yes the power outlets are along the wall, in various places though. The track is actually in the middle of the floor & is oval shaped. In order to run a power cord to the inside track it would have to go overhead or we would have to place a "spotter" to let the girls know when to stop. There is plenty of floor area surrounding the derby track itself. The inside track has a good deal of space as well but you’re right, a power cord would have to go across the track or overhead.

    January 6, 2011

  • Sonic W.

Jud, I will ask the girls this Sunday about any concepts they might have & post it ASAP. As for the whole track being utilized, well, it depends on what you mean. The derby track is painted on the rink floor but definately does not take up the entire surface area. Glad the video was helpful.

    January 5, 2011

  • Curt W.

    Jud,

I say go all out, bring everything! It's going to be a good opportunity for those of us who don't have all that suff (yet) to see it used and learn about it.

    January 5, 2011

  • Sonic W.

Jud, there are several outlets along the walls which you can be utilized. As for the game itself our website has an article on understanding roller derby. There is also a video which will give you an idea of the lighting and space. You would have to look past the girls hitting each other on the video though, lol. The website is http://www.greenvalleyrollergirls.com/
Just click the Roller Derby 101 link , hope this helps.

  • Lara Betts H.

jud- it will just be a logistical question if i can come or not... trust me, the opportunity to photograph a bunch of interesting confident girls on rollerskates is seriously up my alley, lol... and its about time i actually attended an event and shot with you guys! just let me know if you all decide you want it (and i'll stay in touch about going or not...)

    January 5, 2011

  • Lara Betts H.

i have a Vagabond II -- dunno if i can make this event as i have a concert to go to in Radford on this afternoon -- but i'd be happy to lend it if i don't go. I'm in blacksburg.

    January 5, 2011

  • Sonic W.

Jud...we could definately use some action shots! Keep in mind though, this is a new team so only a handful of girls will be giving/receiving hits. There is quite a bit of room at the rink. I'm not sure how large the White Lightning 1600s are but turns 3 & 4 have a lot of extra space. Hope this helps.

    January 4, 2011

  • Dennis N.

Thanks, Jon. I'm going to try and make it, and maybe i can get a fog machine :-)

    December 29, 2010

  • Jon B.

No, that's just where we're meeting. You can shoot wherever works for the group you're shooting with. I know a few of us will be bringing full lighting setups, some will be working with natural light, etc. With this many photographers and models we should be able to get creative and come up with LOTS of different types of shots. I like the idea of a smoke machine. I was thinking about a bubble machine, but they get way too messy inside. :)

    December 27, 2010

  • Dennis N.

Just curious... Is the plan to shoot only in the rink? The lighting situation doesn't get any worse. What do people think of this? Need a simple backdrop and a fog machine. I think there easy to rent and inexpensive.

This is a cool video in a number of respects:
