Right Brain/Left Brain for Artists

“Experimentation has shown that two different hemispheres, or sides, of the brain are responsible for two different modes or manners of thinking. And research also shows that we prefer one side or the other.”

So what’s the difference

Come to our meeting and find out! We’ll explore a simple explanation of right/left brain theory and show its relevance to artists. After taking a short quiz to determine your brain preference, we’ll use specific drawing exercises to activate the creative right brain and that will lead us into our acrylic painting on canvas.

“When you start a painting, you need to be able to visualize the final painting in your mind (right brain, working from the whole), then develop the painting, choosing the elements, matching and mixing colors, placing in the shadows and highlights (right brain, working on various things simultaneously), but at the same time be able to look critically at what you're doing (left brain, being analytical). By finding out whether your thinking is dominated by your right or left brain, you can then deliberately set out to use the 'right brain' way of thinking in your painting or drawing, rather than working on 'auto-pilot'. By trying a different strategy you will probably be surprised by what different results you can produce.”

By training your brain through exercises you can actually increase its ability to help you learn while tapping into your innate creative genius. This is one way to bring new energy and excitement into your art. If you have lost your connection to your creativity or are looking to connect with new art friends, plan to join us at the ArtCentre of Plano on Saturday, March 23.

It will definitely be a fun day so RSVP right away.

Fabulous! I had a great time. After all these years I finally find out I'm right brain dominant. Explains so many things. Really. Can't tell you how freeing that is. Found a new brush stroke! How good does it get?

This was an amazing meeting for me. It felt like we were suspended in a cloud of creative energy woven together with threads connecting all who were there. Joy was in the air and everyone worked attentively on their projects. What is truly remarkable is watching people who have never painted before draw out of their inner being such incredible works. Every meeting is a special wonder for me to behold and I am always deeply touched by the insights of those who attend. Thank you all for choosing to spend the afternoon with us.
