*** To go to this event, you must RSVP here for the Waiting List on Meetup and also send an email to the Captain to reserve a spot on the ship (the Captain is not on Meetup, see their email address below) ***
The Viking ship Munin is a 40 foot long, half-scale replica of a Viking ship from 890 A.D. It sails year round in English Bay, for two hour outings. The Munin is owned by the Norwegian House Society, a registered non-profit charitable organization, and staffed by a volunteer Captain and Crew. It is suggested that guests make a donation to help cover the ship's insurance, harbour fees and maintenance expenses. Charitable tax receipts are issued yearly upon request. Children are welcome but no pets, no smoking and no alcohol.
There are usually 8-10 guest spots available for Meetup members, but it is posted on several Meetup groups so you have to follow a few steps to get one of the spots:
1) RSVP here for the Waiting List on Meetup.
2) YOU MUST SEND AN EMAIL TO THE CAPTAIN at [masked] to reserve a spot for yourself (they are not on Meetup).
a) Put “Viking Ship” in the Subject Line of your email.
b) Say which Meetup group you belong to and ask if there is a spot available for the day you want to go.
c) Tell them whether or not you can help row the ship for the first 15 minutes before it starts sailing for 1.5 hours (six guests are required to row the ship). You can still come sailing if you can't row but everyone needs to help out at certain times (either rowing, being a lookout, pulling on ropes to hoist or set the sail, steering the ship, etc). The rest of the time you can enjoy the view, take photos, learn how to sail, hear about Viking history, practice tying boating knots, or just relax.
d) Include your real name for insurance purposes and a PHONE NUMBER to contact you if the sailing is canceled at the last minute (i.e. not your work number). If your Meetup name is a nickname, include that too so we know who the Captain is referring to on their list of attendees.
3) After you send an email to the Captain and they have confirmed your spot on the ship, we will move your Meetup RSVP from the Waiting List to the Attending List.
4) Dress for the weather and wear gloves if you plan to help row for the first 15 minutes
This event is posted on several Meetup groups and there may also be non-Meetup guests joining the sailing, so there will be more guests than just the ones who RSVP here. Sailings will generally be on Saturdays, but may be moved to the Sunday or canceled based on weather conditions and Crew availability. Safety first, so sometimes a sailing may be canceled ahead of time or even on the dock at the discretion of the Captain. If you cancel without letting the Captain know or are a no show, they will not allow you to sail on the Munin in the future. Your last minute cancellation or no show may result in the rest of the people waiting at the dock and the ship not being able to sail because there are not enough rowers available. They are counting on you.
There is paid parking at the Maritime Museum and Kitsilano Beach, plus some free street parking. If you are taking public transit, you can take the Skytrain to Burrard Station and then the #22 or #2 bus to Kitsilano Beach (Arbutus St). You can also take the #99, #9, #7 or #4 bus to Arbutus St and walk down a few blocks to the beach. Use the transit trip planner here: www.translink.ca .
More information about the ship can be found at www.vikingship.ca .
