Thursday Night Portrait Sessions - 2012 Part 1

We had about 6 or 7 of these portrait sessions last year and I think everyone learnt a lot. What I would like to do here is to start talking about portrait photography with 2 sources of light. Specifically I want to focus on a classic portrait lighting scheme that people like karsh and Irving Penn used to use.

The aim is to light the background from one direction and light the subject from another such that the lit part of the subject falls against the dark part of the background and the dark part of the subject shows against the lit part of the background. Very very dramatic.

We will use two flashes an umbrella and a couple of foam boards to make this happen. Results can be stunning.... By the way, not claiming to be a master of this technique, so we will all learn together.

I'm so sorry I'm not there. I was bringing homemade salsa. I was parked on Parsh's street and was getting out of my truck and spilled the salsa all over me :( Hope you all had fun.

Haha! Parsh, I have to admit, I entertained the idea of coming home and practicing the lighting techniques on the bowl of salsa and uploading them here :D

Thank-you so much Parsh for a great evening. Being able to watch the manipulation of the lights and the almost immediate ability to see the effects shot by shot on the tethered laptop was REALLy great learning experience. Such a pleasure to be there with everyone!

What a great group. One of my favorite meet ups. Loved seeing other lighting techniques that I can't wait to try. Can't wait until next meeting!

Should we bring anything? I have backdrops, lights, umbrellas, pocket wizards, reflectors etc? Not sure if there will only be one set up. Bring camera? This is my first meetup with the group. Looking forward to meeting and learning from everyone.
