The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) has extended a personal invitation to this group for one of their special events.
For those who are curious, BWAC, one of the largest Artist Coalitions in NYC and Is the largest gallery in all 5 Boroughs with over 200 Artists/Members who participate in various art shows during the Spring - Fall seasons. I am one of it's members who is currently exhibiting.
Below are the details to the event:
Science Fiction and fantasy fans will get a rare opportunity to see illustrator and painter Donato Giancola, a titan of the genre, demonstrate his ground-breaking techniques during the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition (BWAC) show OUTER LIMITS this spring. Co-Curators Anna Krupis and Katrina D. Jeffries are very excited that Mr. Giancola will be showing his original artworks in one of the largest exhibition spaces in Brooklyn along with the art of the artist members of BWAC. Considered by many the most popular and successful sci-fi/fantasy artist working today and collected by clients worldwide, Giancola’s list of awards and credits could fill pages. They include eight Chesleys, three Hugos (six nominations), a World Fantasy Award and Spectrum Gold and Silver Medal awards. His clients have included LucasFilm, National Geographic, Microsoft, Random House, the UN, Sci-fi channel and Time-Warner. In addition, he has created stamps for the US Postal Service, commemorating space exploration and technology. Major book publishers and collectors as well as concept design firms regularly seek his services.
Giancola describes himself as a “classical-abstract-realist working with science fiction and fantasy.” His love and appreciation of classical figurative art bridges historical and contemporary figurative art, that is, he goes beyond the commercial to expand science fiction and fantasy into larger, more inclusive themes. He depicts people relating to the changing environment, for example, and is concerned with human goals and achievements while still operating within the realm of the fantastic.
Born in 1967, raised in Vermont and with a BFA in painting from Syracuse University, Giancola currently lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two daughters. He is known as an excellent teacher whether he’s in his classroom at the School of Visual Arts in New York or at his computer directing an online course. He has also participated in innumerable seminars and conventions from Manhattan to Moscow.
So bring your questions along with your imagination and you may leave with new ideas that explore the limits of your own psyche. Find out who inspired him and you may be inspired yourself.
BWAC is located at 499 Van Brunt Street in now-hip Red Hook section of Brooklyn.
