TEACHING FOR THE MONTH :

January, 2012

The flame of wisdom lights the heart. Wisdom is beyond intellect.

It is an innate knowing how to relate with challenging situations,
and the ability to remain steadfast in our ideals and in truth. Wisdom is expressed through warmth, confidence, and connection.
At first we may live buried in the mud of worldly pursuit, such that we do not realize there is anything more to life. We struggle with the dualities of likes and dislikes, tiring ourselves on the wheel of unfulfilled wants. We may continue then to discriminate between the mundane and the spiritual, to turn from what appears to us as worldly distraction.
In truth, the awakened heart is one with all. The awakened one loves without need or attachment. The awakened one accepts both virtues and faults, as a mother nurtures a child. The liberated soul knows all to live in the heart and the light to suffuse all.

In giving, we are fulfilled.
In serving, we are uplifted.
In loving, we awaken.

November, 2011

Live in devotion to the One. Let every thought, word, and action be suffused with devotion as a sweet might be drenched in honey syrup. Offer yourself.
So, work flows easily as worship. Desire for sense pleasure falls away naturally as does the blossom, however fragrant, when fruit ripens. Innate wisdom arises.
We discover an unbroken connection with the beings around us. This sense of connection remains steady even as interactions fluctuate. We rest undisturbed by praise or blame, support or lack thereof, attention or inattention . . . the dualities of the created world.
As we become completely fulfilled in the One, so we lose body and mind in the One that is both immanent and transcendent–deep in the heart of every being even as it is beyond form, time, or space.

How can we be anything other than who we are? Only with great effort.
We are already one. Still, we try so hard to distinguish ourselves.
We are the calf crying out for its mother’s milk when she is already waiting in the shed. We need only turn towards her and be silent to be satisfied. We cannot drink the milk while calling for more.
Become one in thought, word, and deed. Become one.
When we let go of effort, life is effortless. Effort is resistance. Resistance is in the mind. Be who you are.
Become the milk. Flow freely and nourish all. This is true happiness.

As we find peace within, the world becomes peaceful. As we discover the sacred within, all becomes sacred. The sacred is beyond duality.
Dispassion manifests not as a lack of interest but in a connection so deep that it can only be unwavering. This is sthitaprajna, steady wisdom.
Whether we live in a way that is true to who we are is a choice we make each day.

August, 2011

What is the nature of compassion?
Compassion tainted by attachment brings suffering. We lose our inner balance, get pulled into the whirlpool of emotion, and may respond ineffectively.
This kind of compassion is not a bad thing. It is the doorway to mahakaruna, great compassion.
Great compassion is  an expression of truth. This compassion is tempered with dispassion.
Dispassion or detachment doesn’t mean that we don’t care about others. It means that we care from a place of strength. It means that we are able to tap into our natural wisdom–even as we witness suffering, even as we feel empathy. This union of compassion and wisdom is the key to humble service in the world.
