Granbury disaster relief

LATE NOTICE (as of 5:30 p.m. Saturday): It looks like the Habitat for Humanity does still need volunteers for tomorrow. Go to: http://www.trinityhabitat.org/. Click on the volunteer link on the left side of the page and register, then look for the May 26 Granbury event and sign up. Do this ASAP, pronto if you want to go. Also be sure to print out the waiver from the website and fill it out and bring it with you.

I'm going to have to bow out since I can't make it until it's over. Maybe next time?

    May 25, 2013

    • Rob

I don't know if you'll see this, but they'll be working in that neighborhood next Saturday. I can't attend, but Wendy is thinking of going.

Another day of really hard work; the difference in a week wasn't really all that noticeable. Would like to help out again next weekend, but I can only drive down on Sunday and Habitat is just planning on working on Saturday...

    May 27, 2013

  • Rob

Wendy, I sent you a text: I hope to be in south FW by 730. Do you want to meet somewhere and then just get on the road? Or possibly grab some quick breakfast food, like at Sonic or Whataburger or McDs?

    May 25, 2013

  • Rob

As I said a few days ago, DO NOT GO to the Methodist church. Here are the final directions - IF you secure a spot on the Habitat's volunteer page:
Take HWY 377 South into Granbury
    Turn left onto Davis Rd.
Turn right into the stone gates at Meanwhile Ranch (across from Sundown Trail Street)
And once more, be sure to have the waiver with you.

You guys may already know about this but for those of us who want to help but can't make it out to Granbury or Cleburne there is a site where you can donate money. This site is collecting money for a specific atheist family, rather than going through an organization. Here is the link: http://www.indiegogo.com/projec...

I wasn't sure if that was the case or if the registering was weird. I emailed them but am thinking I won't get a response in time. Call me and I'll follow you out Sunday?

    1 · May 25, 2013

    • Rob

Okay... what was your number and what time do you want to get on the road?

      May 25, 2013

  • Rob

Okay, thanks Wendy. I did register, but it looks like their needs for Sunday are filled. Sigh. This is very frustrating. Obviously I want to have a designated place to go to at a designated time so that we can help out. I'm going to call Mission Granbury today (Saturday) to see what's going on with them...

We wanted to bring stuff to donate. Any ideas in what might be needed? Clothes, toys, food Ect.

    May 24, 2013

  • Rob

Thanks Wendy. I sent an email to the volunteer director at Mission Granbury asking what we could do, but the address was wrong so that option didn't work. And in your post, there's no link to click for the volunteer page. Can you post it again?

It's not something people can just show up to? Would they really turn people away? I honestly have no idea.

    May 23, 2013

    • Rob

If you tried to get into the neighborhood without a specific address & assignment, they might. When I was there, state troopers had checkpoints set up to make sure that the only people getting in were residents and volunteers - I had an orange wristband put on to gain entry...

Take note, everyone: I just found out that the organization I partnered with last weekend has understandably packed up and headed to Oklahoma. In other words, don't go to the Methodist church, they won't have anything for you there. Now I'm not sure what to do because they told me that Stonewater church is arranging volunteer efforts but they want to train people at 7:15 each morning and then send them into the neighborhood. I don't know of any secular organizations helping down there. Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks! My kids and I are going to head out a little earlier than you all. My son has to work in the evening, so we need to head back home no later than 4pm. I appreciate your efforts rounding up the group

    May 22, 2013

    • Rob

Okay, be careful down there. I don't know if you've been in an environment like that before, but I'll just say that TV news & internet photos pale in comparison to the feeling you get when you're actually standing in the middle of it all.

My address is 2720 White Rock Dr. Fort Worth 76131. Phone # is[masked]

    May 22, 2013

    • LetUsRatiocinate

Is this phone number good for you in Granbury, too?

      May 22, 2013

    • Rob

      Yep, it's my cell.

      May 22, 2013

  • Rob

Please note that the 12:00 meeting time concerns when to meet at my house if anyone wants to do that. That puts me in Granbury around 1/1:15. In a moment I'll post directions for anyone who wants/needs to travel solo.

Can we just show up in Granbury at any time to help, or is there an official start time?

      May 22, 2013

    • Rob

I think anytime after 8 is okay, but some people there told me they got there around 8 and had to wait quite a while before getting assigned.

Directions (address is 301 Loop 567):
    - Hwy 377 south
    - Business Hwy 377/Pearl exit to the right
    - Drive into the Historic District and turn right at the Houston St./Hwy 51 junction (Look for the Hwy 51 sign)
    - Next, turn left at Avery/TX-Loop 567 - if you reach the lake on Hwy 51, you've gone too far
    - The church is immediately on the left, it's huge so you can't miss it
    - The volunteer staging point is in the parking lot behind the building

I definitely want to help, but can't make it down until about 2:00. Anybody else want a ride starting about 1:00?

Hey Stan. I'm actually thinking of skipping the Saturday picnic in order to put in 2 days of work down there. But keep me posted when you arrive...

    • Rob

Think you could make it on a Sunday?

      May 19, 2013

  • Rob

You can also bring food, but there were a lot of people (Home Depot, police, even local residents) making the rounds with food and drinks.

    May 19, 2013

  • Rob

Of course, if it's sunny you'll need a hat, too...

    May 19, 2013

  • Rob

Necessities: water, sunblock, gloves and pants. Some people were wearing shorts because it was so hot but with a lot of ragged wood and metal debris in the area I think jeans would be best. Where would everyone like to meet? Here in Fort Worth, or in Granbury? I vote for car-pooling, if everyone else is OK with that.
