12 Years a Slave

In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty at the hands of a malevolent slave owner, as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon's chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist will forever alter his life.

Based on a true story, this thought provoking movie will no doubt spur a lot of great conversation.

We will be going to see the 6:50 showing of this movie at Sundance. If you are interested in dinner before the show, we will meet at Flat Top Grill at 5:15, or as soon as you can.  If you are not doing dinner, meet us in the lobby area at Sundance at 6:35, and we will select seats together and head in to see the 6:50 show. Please make every effort to be on time for dinner, as our time will be a little tight.

Hope to see you there!

It was a great pleasure meeting first timers Sarah, Sue, and Tammy, as well as gathering with all the ladies I've met at previous events. It is an incredibly powerful and thought provoking movie - not one designed to make you feel good about our past. Highly recommend to those who haven't seen it yet.

I enjoyed meeting the new people, too. I started to write several things about the movie earlier, but nothing seemed adequate. It was indeed a very powerful and profound movie, which was to be expected given the content. It was one of those movies you knew you needed to see. Like we said, similar to "Schindler's List", it was upsetting to watch but it felt necessary. I am glad I saw it, though and the supper beforehand was great. I look forward to more fun with the Fab 40's ladies. I'd attend a lot more events if I lived a little closer (I'm the one from Janesville). :-) Good to see familiar faces and meet new people!

thank you all for making me feel welcome. I have never thought of myself as a joiner.I know that at this stage of my life I have to reach outside of my comfort zone in order to make friends. And while we might not all come from the same walks of life or backgrounds I appreciate that we all come together for one common idea which is to meet new people. I have always loved thought provoking movies and it brings me great pleasure to talk to other people about their thoughts on the same movie.

Sobering, powerful, sometimes raw brutal violence. And the
Persistence of this man to keep going on. Is that hope and faith?
It will be interesting to see what this thought provoking movie
receives in the way of any nominations for the academy.

Very good supper and good to be able to chat with people on a somewhat smaller scale than I've been to so far. I had a real nice time.

Snowing now, but it's supposed to be nice, so the drive from Janesville shouldn't be too bad. I'll be there for both dinner and the movie, sounds like fun. :-)
