Art and Exercise: Morning Hike with Lunch in Paoli

We had such a good time on our hike last weekend, so let's do it again!  But this time, let's head further down Hwy. PB and have an early lunch at the Schoolhouse Cafe in Paoli, then we can wander through some of the art galleries and antiques shops.

Currently Habitat for Humanity is hosting a Salvage Art Show and Sale at the Artisans' Gallery.  Check out the unique ways 60 local artists have turned salvage materials into art.  The purpose of this show is to create a community event for artists who repurpose another person's junk into works of art, thus saving it from the landfill.  The artwork is for sale at the gallery and proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity of Dane County.  Check out the show's artwork at www.restoredane.org/art-show-201.

We'll start out at 10:00 with  some real exercise with a morning hike at Prairie Moraine Park.  Unlike some of the flat trails we have used lately, this park is part of the Ica Age State Trail, and is full of hills and valleys.  There are several different paths you can take through the park, but the main loop is over 2 miles in length with some breath taking (literally) short climbs.  Most of the paths are covered with wood chips, although with the heavy rains we had earlier in the week, there may be a few spots that have residual muddy areas.  This time I'm pretty sure the apple orchard will be in bloom!  The weather forecast calls for a partly cloudy day with a high of 61, so dress accordingly.

Yes, this is the big County Dog Park on Highway PB in Verona, and you can bring your four legged friends along.  Be aware though that it's easy to lose your dog here, as there are so many different trails they can take, so if they aren't well behaved, you might want to leave them on leash or leave them home.  This Meetup is primarily intended as a hike, not just a dog-park Meetup.

Directions:  Prairie Moraine Park is located on County Highway PB, south of County Road M.  From Madison, take Hwy. 18/151 (Verona Road) south, past McKee Road.  Exit the freeway at the second Verona exit, for Hwy. PB, and turn left at the light.  There will be another traffic light where County Hwy. M crosses PB. Go south toward Paoli, the park will be on your left about 3/4 mile south of County Road M at Wesner Road.  You will also see Resurrection Church on the left on Wesner Road right by the park. Please make every effort to be on time, as it's difficult to be waiting for people and it could be hard to find us once we pick a trail.  Meet inside the gate by the picnic table.  If you are running late or have trouble finding the park, contact me at[masked]-3716.

We will spend about an hour on our hike.  For those interested, we will head down to the charming village of Paoli for an early lunch at the Schoolhouse Cafe.  Paoli is about 2.3 miles further south on Hwy. PB.  From the Park (Wesner Road), turn left onto Hwy. PB, drive 2.1 miles, and turn right at the stop sign, onto Paoli Road.  (The road to the left is Sun Valley, and that is the road sign you will see).  After you turn right, the Schoolhouse Cafe will be on your left.  http://paolischoolhouseshops.com

Afterward we can explore the art galleries and antique shops of Paoli.  The Habitat Art Show and Sale is in the Artisan Gallery, right across the street from the Cafe.

If you want to just join us for lunch, plan to Meet at the Schoolhouse Cafe around 11:15.

NOTE; There is currently a slight chance of rain in the forecast.  If the weather doesn't allow us to hike, we will meet at 10:45 at the Fitchburg Target store, located on Highway PD, just west of Verona Road.  Park on the east side of the parking lot, near the entrance at Fitchrona Road.  We can car pool from there.  Check for an update on plans by 9:00 Saturday morning.

Hi Nancy, I came down with the stomach flu this afternoon, so I'm going to need to cancel the walk and breakfast.

I visited the cafe this morning, and made a reservation for our group. Last week we had 19 YES RSVPs, and by Saturday only 7 showed up. Please do not wait until the last minute if you need to cancel, and for sure, do not be a No Show.

There is a store - next to the Zazen gallery or maybe a bit further down towards the church where they sell chickens, chicken feed, chicken coops but also have the greatest store with chicken gifts!
