Wreaths Across America @ Arlington National Cemetery

Please join members of the Fairlington Social Club for Wreaths Across America @ Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday December 14, 2013 at 8:30 AM for the laying of wreaths.

Each year the Worcester Wreath Company makes and decorates holiday wreaths and places them on over 5,000 headstones at Arlington National Cemetery to honor our nation’s fallen heroes and recognize the sacrifices our Veterans have made for our country.

FSC members will meetup at 8:30 AM on the right side of the Memorial Amphitheater as you are facing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Memorial Amphitheater at 9:30 AM.

The ceremony will provide some introductory remarks and a short briefing to provide basic information to volunteers.  After the ceremony, volunteers will move to the designated areas of the cemetery where they will participate in the laying of wreaths on headstones.

When you place the wreath, you may be the first person to visit that particular grave in years, so we hope you will take time to read the stone and honor the memory of that hero.

Arlington Cemetery is hallowed ground. Please be respectful at all times.

At 11:00 AM there will be a wreath laying at President Kennedy’s grave followed by an 11:30 AM wreath laying at the USS Maine Memorial. The final ceremony will take place at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at 12:00 Noon.

The use of Metro is highly encouraged. While the Arlington Cemetery stop on the Blue Line stops at the cemetery entrance, you can access various parts of the Cemetery from the Rosslyn, Pentagon, and Pentagon City stops via only a short walk.

Multiple gates will be open to provide pedestrian access to the ceremony. In addition, parking spaces will be available at the Pentagon, Navy Annex, Fort Myer, as well as the parking garage at the main cemetery entrance. There will be free parking available in the visitors parking lot at Arlington from 7:15 AM -- 1:00 PM.

No food or drink, except water, is allowed within the cemetery grounds.

Restrooms are available at the Information Center, Women’s Memorial, and at the Memorial Amphitheater.

Dress for the weather. Wear comfortable all-weather shoes and gloves.

Volunteers may bring leaf rakes or poles to load up on multiple wreaths for easier transfer.

Schedule:

7:15 AM -- Arlington National Cemetery Gates open to public

7:45 AM -- Ceremonial Wreaths Across America Truck Parade arrives @ main gate

9:30 AM -- Opening Ceremony @ Memorial Amphitheater

9:45 AM -- Flyby by HMX1 helicopters; Wreath laying begins at sites throughout cemetery

Thanks to all of you who came out this morning to participate in Wreaths Across America @ Arlington National Cemetery.

Alas, they changed the location of the opening ceremonies at the last minute due to the large number of volunteers.

We had a few missed connections among FSCers but the weather held off and everyone had a good time, especially lunch at Fort Myer.

    Gary,
I never found the group, but did attend the opening ceremonies and place several wreaths on the graves. It is a very memorable experience. Thanks so much for organizing the event. Hope to find the group next year.

Sorry Gary, I am just getting over a terrible cold/cough and with the weather so cold, I think it is best I don't go out in the extreme cold. I was hoping it would be nicer weather this year.

While the weather for Saturday is not looking great, the wreath laying event will be held rain, snow or shine.

Arlington National Cemetery conducts funerals 6 days a week and can block off only 1 day for the wreath laying event. Regardless of weather, there is one day and one day only to place the wreaths on the graves so please join us this coming Saturday morning.

Looks like weather will be cold and mixed precipitation. I assume this is a rain or shine event. Also, I am scheduled on call all Friday night, I'll see if a colleague will take it. If not, I may have to cancel out.
