Holiday Hike to Maryland Heights, Harper's Ferry

  • Maryland Heights, Harpers Ferry

Kick off the holiday season this year with a hike to Maryland Heights, overlooking the cozy town of Harpers Ferry.  Harpers Ferry will be celebrating their annual Olde Tyme Christmas event; the town will be decorated for the holidays.  We'll hike up to the overlook of Maryland Heights.  The hike is about 4 miles long and there is some strenuous uphill sections. You need to be in decent shape and sure-footed to do this hike.  The hike will take approximately three hours, maybe less.  It will be cold, dress in layers as you will warm up on the trail once we get moving.  Bring a snack to eat at the top, and after the hike we'll warm up at one of the Town's Taverns and take in the town's festivities.

For those wishing to carpool from Arlington, we will meet at 9:00 AM Sunday morning at the Fairlington Villages Management Office located at 3001 S. Abingdon Street Arlington, Virginia 22206. Please be on time or be prepared to drive yourself.

For those wishing to drive on their own directly to the trail head in Harper's Ferry, meet the group at 100 Potomac Street Harpers Ferry, WV 25425 ( Potomac Street & U.S. 340 Alt / Shenandoah Street ) at 10:30 AM by the footbridge that crosses the Potomac River.

So I'm dozing off (exhausted from all the great fun of the hike) while riding back--except when I'm jarred awake by Helmut's constant erratic driving--so I'm dozing off--except when Helmut's incessant talking prevents that--and I have this dream of a bearlike voice crying out, "Rescue me, Rescue me, Rescue me", and that's when I decided that I will return the bear that Adrienne absconded from a recent hike, I will return that baby bear to it's true family/tribe at the National zoo, just as soon the the event host schedules a zoo hike. (I will refrain from making a formal complaint with the NBA (National Bear Association) provided this hike is scheduled in the near future.

Don, return the bear to its rightful owner!!

Don - that bear saved your life!!! Those cries for help woke you up with each erratic turn meant to jettison dead weight from my vehicle. Then I had to talk you into your sleep, only to fail again due to that cute baby bear crying "Rescue me" and waking you up again!!

Ok sure, the weather's perfect for a hike, and Adrienne and Gary are great organizers, and Harper's Ferry is really nice this time of year, but the Fairlington Villages Management Office that Gary mentions in his post happens to be right next to the field where cool people will be playing beginner's ultimate frisbee today at 3:30, in case anyone's maybe having second thoughts about hiking and thinking about playing ultimate instead.

I think people are meeting at 9 at the North Fairlington Community Center to ride share. Is that right?

I'll meet at Fairlington and can drive or ride with someone else.

Hoping to make it (will change status if I can't)... but I'm checking directions - where are we meeting? Any place specifically on High Street? I've never been there and want to be sure I can find you! Thx

    Hey Everybody!

Hard to believe that December is upon us, and our holiday hike to Harper's Ferry is next Sunday. If your status has changed and you will no longer attend, please update it as there are several folks on the waiting list.

Helmut- Sorry dude! I actually wrote that you consider yourself the group's alpha male. But don't let me discourage you from wishful thinking. In fact, I encourage you to apply for a Fab Five spot, and may recommend you--but only if you promise not to sit on Santa's lap during the post-hike festivities. Not cool!

  • Helmut

Don - I like how you are able to spot an alpha male when you see one! But don't let that discourage you from building up your self-confidence within the pack.

Don, there was no tampering with nature, that little bear was manufactured in China for your special emotional needs. And, I was just thinking of you this morning - there's a Hello Kitty Float on the Macy's Day Parade which I hope you observed for your emotional comfort on this thanksgiving day. **Looking forward to the hike, almost a week away. Soon it will be time to get the hiking boots, hello kitty bandaids and care bear out**

@Gary & Helmut-- Since you guys consider yourselves the alpha males of the group/hike, just a private word of advice based on the photos for this event: If Santa is around for the after-hike festivities, you should not sit on his lap. Not cool! Awesome!

Don I appreciate that you are an ardent observer of nature’s wonders.

During the last hike there were reports the the event host was
tampering with the native wildlife--namely, removing a wild animal from its habitat. Perhaps the event host could benefit from some
training by a local group, Fairlington Caring Society (FCS).
I've included some pictures to help:
Don rescuing and caring for a young bear--

Don caring for some young chicks--

While the factual report noted above is troubling, I'm confident that the event host can improve and will do better on this hike!
