Our guest speaker is Nathan Burrell, manager of the James River Parks System.

Nathan Burrell was recently appointed Park Superintendent of James River Park System. As the system’s Trail Manager he had already helped develop trails to link the parks to schools, greenways, shopping centers and other community facilities. Named one of Style Weekly’s “40 Under 40,” Nathan will discuss current trends and future developments in a park system recognized by both Trail Runner and Blue Ridge Outdoors magazines.

The information was useful and interesting but the talk could have been condensed into 45 minutes max.

Yes, I agree that sometimes having the flexibility to present shorter programs may help attract more participation. At least some of these meetings likely can be condensed without sacrificing important content. However, I did like the audience participation. Again, maybe someone like Ralph White, his predecessor, could assist in compiling a side show on automatic timer, or slides of all the parks in the park system. Maybe the James River Park System already has some sort of general slide show to go along with speaking engagements. If not, it probably would be a good thing to have it done!

This was good and timely information - we need to help Nathan put together just a photo show of the James to be projected while he is talking - maybe the Friends of James River Park could provide that. Not a slide show for him to talk to - just a series of photographs set on automatic timer.

He was an engaging speaker. He added humor to his presentation, and the audience responded positively to his discussion. It would have been a bonus for him to have prepared and presented some sort of audio visual aid to supplement the discussion.

Very good information on where the park is headed. Looking forward to helping out in the future.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
