Blind 'Cheap' Wine Tasting Challenge Party in Novato

  • This location is shown only to members

The Details:
Want to discover some new inexpensive wines? Each person coming to this meetup will be required to bring a bottle of wine that retails under $8. Upon arrival each bottle will be placed in a plain brown paper bag identified only by a random letter. All participants will then be invited to conduct leisurely 'blind tastings' of each of the wines and asked to score each wine on a variety of criteria using a scoresheet provided at the start of the evening. As we do, we will use the time to socialize, listen to music, and nibble on some snacks.  Once everyone has completed tasting and scoring all of the wines, the scoresheets will be tallied revealing which wines were most popular.

While not a rigorous scientific method, this is a great way to discover some tasty new wines that won't cripple your pocketbook.

RSVPS will be accepted starting Tuesday, 9/18 at 7pm. Attendance will be limited to 20 guests. There will be a $5 fee to attend this event. Lite snacks will be provided.

Great fun--a few discoveries, and some truly awful wines (especially the one I brought!)

Hi Edwin, any thoughts on food to accompany the wine? I can just imagine the buzz of wine on an empty stomach.

I will have some hors d'ouerves on hand (breaad/cheese/fruit/vegies/dip/nuts & yada yada) but folks are welcome to bring additional snacks. One attendee has told me they are bringing a fig and/or apricot mix. I'll send out a note to all a few days prior to the date.

I got cool jazz on vinyl if you have a record player or I can burn a couple tunes on cd. Perfect music to taste "cheap" wine with.

don't have a record player but cd is welcome...thx

A great idea. Dark socks also work well for xmas wine gifts. ;)

Finally, something I'm an "expert" at. If you want to make it more of a challenge set it for under $7.00. The brown paper bag is a nice touch ;)

That is actually a valid point....the socks must not only be clean, but must not smell of detergent either.

yes...e.g., '...hints of vanilla and oak with an oxydol finish...' just won't do

Just ran across this article...apropos of our little wine-tasting meetup: http://www.salon.com/2012/09/30...

So funny...because that day I am actually going WINE TASTING with a group of winery friends on a private bus in we hired to take us around Napa! Your concept sounds great—wish I could attend.
