Due to the very large number of no shows over the last four book club meetups, I am instituting a change to the book nomination process for future votes.
* Books can only be nominated by active participants in the club. An active participant is defined as someone who has RSVPd yes and actually attended a book club discussion (the only exception being someone who has joined a waiting list and not been able to attend because they've been at capacity.)
* If you have not yet RSVPd and attended a meeting, you will be able to nominate books once you've attended your first meeting.
* If you are a no show to a meetup (a no show being someone who has RSVP'd yes and not attended without changing their RSVP and/or reaching out to the organizer) you may no longer nominate books.
Please remember, there is a three no show rule with this group. If you are a no show three times you will be removed from the group. Those who RSVP yes and do not show up are potentially taking spots from those who want to attend as well as making it very difficult for me, as the organizer, as I need to have accurate counts to reserve enough space with the venues ahead of time.
With regards to the venues, I am doing my best to hold the meetups at reasonably priced venues. Unfortunately, this area does not have a lot of inexpensive coffee shops and cafes who are: open past 7 or 8, have enough room to accommodate a larger group (which I can reserve in advance), and are quiet enough for a book club. If you have suggestions (and have verified with the venue that they meet the above criteria) please feel free to send them to me.
If you have any questions about the above, please feel free to contact me.
There are several book clubs out there but they either seem to be disbanding, specialized or for women only so I decided to start this one. I am the former organizer of a large book club in Nashville which, I'm proud to say, is still going strong and I hope to bring that same success to this one. I had the opportunity to read a lot of great books I may not have picked up on my own and I hope to be introduced to even more!
This is a co-ed bookclub that will meet once a month, at local coffee shops and cafes in the area, and discuss one book per month. While the meetups will happen primarily in the Edgewater/Andersonbille/Rogers Park area, it isn't limited to people who live in those areas; all are welcome!
Books will be selected through a nomination and voting process (via the polling system on Meetup) and provided three months at a time so folks (especially those who like to use the library) have a chance to find and read the books.
Other events that don't require reading a book (but do have a literary theme) will also be set up such as checking out the movie versions of books we've read, live productions, etc.
