A question was raised, being nice or ethical may not conducive to creativity. If we look at Roman republican and the empire periods. The former was boring, peaceful, ethical and the latter, excitng and turbulant, violent, and unethical. The people suffered in the latter. The philosophers looked at society in the long term, and deduced the lessons. The analogy is that are we now leaving the Republican period and entered to the Empire period for some time? On the individual level, an anti-social creature seemed not able to get along with the people surrounding him. In a confined environment, nice social behavior seem conducive to success.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was nice meeting everyone (my first Meetup with this group). It was great to be part of an exchange of ideas and insights within such a thoughtful, considerate, and actively engaged group.

Somebody played sick at work so they could go out tonight, so I get to cover them. I wanted Mexican food. Insert sad emoticon--> :-(

Hello everyone, this discussion looks like it'll be an interesting one! Would you mind if I brought a friend? I can't promise that I'll come, but I'll try.

What is ethics? Is it personal or inter-personal? Is ethics still useful? What has the development of science influenced ethics?

I had to look-up Principle of Permissible Harm. Kant has been mocked his impracticality. Never lie? It's ALWAYS wrong? Hmm.I just humbly wanted to point out those 2 schools show us the immense difficulty in achieving a full, final, rational account of ethics. Just considering Kant - what freak of nature.. almost alien-like intelligence working day-after-day for decades on these issues. And John S. Mill.. lol, his childhood education is legendary -google it. You flatter me with the bit about me being clever. Thanks, my sensitive male ego is susceptible to compliments from intelligent, thoughtful ladies. But look, I ain't clever, I'm just not busy (lol) and that feeds my curiosity in philosophy. I'm almost hopelessly confused and my memory sucks, but I enjoy and find it useful to talk to others about it.

      Jay,

Hopelessly confused and forgetful, eh? Just wait ‘til you’re my age. I agree; ethics is quite a slippery slope. Lots of rhetoric but not nearly as much follow-through. Apt reference to John S. Mill, by the way. Some quotes of his that are worthy of discussion: “Actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness; wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness.”

“The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.”

Asked around and got the following recommendations for meeting locations in Bealeton: M & P Pizza; Grioli's Italian, and El Agave Mexican. I am told that these are local restaurants with decent food, reasonable prices, that work well for small groups, and are easily assessed from Hwy 17. Thinking of you, Jason!

    Hey gang,

Next meeting scheduled for February 23rd. Location will be Warrenton, venue to be decided. Suggestions welcome.

We’ll discuss ethics during this meeting, with regard to religious controls, political influences, and societal changes that have necessitated an expansion of ideologies. Will include Aristotelian and Confucian theories, as well as the field of moral psychology (e.g., the works of Owen Flanagan). Some links to explore for ideas: Aristotelian Ethics:
