In the fall of 2009, I was searching for a group of like-minded people in our community in Fayette County, Georgia, hoping that I could find just a few, fellow freethinkers to befriend and share interesting conversations. By chance, I found a small discussion group that met regularly to discuss interesting topics in science and philosophy, however, the group was not accepting new members. Wanting to create an open and inclusive group for the secular community in our area, we created the
Fayette Freethought Society
and we began meeting for dinner at the Mellow Mushroom in Peachtree City. As our membership began to grow, we added a monthly Discussion Group and other social gatherings, Book Clubs, speaker events, holiday parties, and community outreach opportunities. We also adopted the 1-mile stretch of Highway 54 that runs through the center of Peachtree City, GA. Our mission was, and continues to be, to reach out to other secular people in Georgia and provide a sense of community, friendship and acceptance.
