Sorry that I missed you all yesterday. I arrived at Blackwater around 8:45 AM and once I got to the Visitor Center I camped out at the Live Event Tent from 10-2 AM catching the Live Event presentations. Had a front row seat for all the events. Quite sure that you all had a great time as well.

Hi All, I've never done a trip like this and I almost always have gear envy anyway. Am wondering if the lenses I have will be adequate? I have a 28-75mm 2.8 and a[masked]mm 3.5-4.0. I also have a prime 50mm 1.8 but that only works with my old D50. My current camera is a Nikon D5100. My[masked] seemed to do a great job in Florida tho I wasnt shooting anything at a long distance. Am curious if this will do and if you guys are bringing other gear as well?

I believe that there is going to be opportunities to get up close to tame birds if I am understanding correctly. I have gone to Blackwater a lot, but not for this festival. So I think you will be alright. As long as the image is clear, that is what cropping is for. :-)

My whole family shoots, but I can't afford three large zooms. But momma gets the Sigma 150-500. :-) My daughter got nice images with a kit lens when we were there on President's Day.

Thanks Emily for sending the directions. Now Oakley Street, if this is for the Canvasback ducks, I've been there already. Got a tip from a program on TV, I don't know if it's still on, called Wild Photo Adventures with a Freelance Photographer named Doug Gardner. He was up in that area and he did a segment on his show. It took me 2 tries to get photos of the Canvasbacks. First time I went up there, they wasn't there. Either I was too early or too late. I wrote an email to Doug and said, "Hey Doug, what happened to the ducks, brother?" I drove all the way from Riverdale and no luck." He replied, "LOL! You were a bit too late. Check back earlier in the winter or something like that". The second time, it was around late January or early February and they were there in full force. Had my own corn. Other photographers were there as well. Got plenty of shots. But you're right. It is a great to-do on a bird or nature photographer's list.

    Hi Emily,
This sounds like a fun day! Enjoyed my time with you all at Kinder Farm. I would like to attend, but I have this little phobia about driving on the Bay Bridge. Would anyone not mind a hitchhiker from Bay 50?

Hi Terry, by all means you can come along! The way it's looking, this group may be a bit fragmented anyway. I'll increase the group number so you can confirm.

The tentative event schedule can now be viewed at:http://www.fws.gov/blackwater/pdf/eagle-festival-schedule.pdf

Their live bird programs begin at 10:00 a.m., and a variety of raptors will be on display that we can capture. We can see what type of photo opportunity can be had for this section of the day.

Enroute a short stop at Cambridge and the "Wall of Shame" will be made. If we depart at 7:00 a.m., we should arrive to Cambridge/Oakley Street around 8:00am and depart 8:45, arriving Blackwater at 9:15am

We will take the day as it comes after that, depending on how many visitors are there and what birds are available to photograph. We can drive the wildlife loop, or go area roads in search of our feathered friends.
Please make sure you dress plenty warm, and bring water and lunch with you. There are concessions available onsite, but I'm unaware of what they're offering.

My cell phone number for that day is[masked]-4666.
    See you next Saturday!
    Emily

This sounds good to me Brenda. I believe you're bringing two other people with you right? I also would like to leave there by 2pm as well. Are you familiar with Oakley Street in Cambridge?

I am bringing my husband and daughter. He shoots and we are teaching our daughter. Blackwater is her favorite place. Not familiar with Oakley Street, but I am sure I can find it.
