In Search of Tanagers

The Patuxent Research Refuge - North Tract is a huge area that offers a variety of habitats for birds.

While hot in mid-summer, the possibility of finding tanagers is good. Let's get out there and see if we get lucky.

We will drive the paved wildlife loop in hopes of finding summer birds, including indigo buntings, sparrows, and warblers.

There are also hummingbird feeders next the visitors center with a great colored backdrop. Spend time stalking the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds for that perfect image.

We will meet at the North Tract of Patuxent Research Refuge. Bring water and a snack. Prepare for the heat accordingly.

All visitors are required to sign in with the visitors center, and sign out prior to departure.

Karan four section tripods should fit inside your luggage, measure before you buy to confirm. They are a little slower than 3 section ones to setup. The prices range all over the place. Tell the vendor you trust/use what your heaviest camera/lens setup is. If you have specific interest mention that too. At this point I wouldn't buy legs that were over 2.75 to 3 lbs. You can get legs and head together but that option is generally inferior. Service Photo which is the only good store I know at this point that's good and not totally to far away (Balt). I've know Jim Duley for a dozen years or more and is a good honest man. He was the manager of my local Peen Camera in Laurel.

I've been fighting a virus all day, If I'm not there at the meeting time tomorrow morning I'm not going to be - so don't wait for me .
I was hoping to test out my auditory birding for scarlet and summer tanager's songs and calls, and I really want to see hummers. If I don't see you guys good luck to you all tomorrow.

I hope you start to feel better Kevin. We'll miss you. The hammers will be there for a little while so maybe you can make it out another day.

    Hi Emily
Do you expect we will see hummers on this trip or is it a bit early? If they are there would you have a sense of the approximate distance we will be shooting from? I haven't been to the North Tract in a zillion years.
    Thanks
    Kevin

I'm going to scout it out this week and let you know what I find in the way of hummers. Let's hope they're there!

    Question for the group.
Have you all ever had a picture that was fine, that you posted on a Meetup site and it ending up on the web site being clipped? I had a good time on my last outing but I just found out that my shot of the Osprey ended up on the website with it's right wing clipped.
I think I had this happen ~ 3-4 years ago.
    Thanks
    Kevin
