Hike around Great Hill in Acton!

  • to
  • Information Kiosk

215 Main St, Acton, MA (map)

    42.467705 -71.456306

  • I will be at the trailhead by 3:45; I have a black Yaris. [masked]
  • The days are getting longer...time to SUMMIT GREAT HILL in ACTON!

A loop trail takes us through some interesting conservation land in Acton.  We may see what is nearly a climax forest with its mix of ash, hickory, beech, sugar maple, and red and white oak and a habitat for nesting bird species such as scarlet tanagers, red-eyed vireos, redstarts, ovenbirds and several species of owls.  In addition, we will summit Great Hill, the highest point in Acton at 350 feet!  Wow! We will also take a short detour to see another interesting feature near the Piper Road wetlands area - a bowl-shaped depression in a natural outcrop of bedrock. This stone artifact is thought to have been an Indian grinding stone, a theory that is supported by the presence nearby of an intermittent stream that would have been useful in the preparation of grain for the grinding process.

    Distance: About 2.5 miles
    Tortoise time: About 2 hours
Elevation gain: Minor...highest point is 350'

Please wear sturdy shoes or boots and wool socks.  Some of the land may be wet, so waterproof shoes are best. Bring  a snack and water.   Poles recommended. Please carry a flashlight or head lamp.  Hike will go on in drizzle or fog - steady rain will cancel.

DIRECTIONS: The Information Kiosk is located at the junction of Main St (Rte 27) and Prospect St in Acton.  There is a sign and parking. The approximate street address is 215 Main St.

First Monday I've had a free afternoon in a while, (and it's going to snow again on Wednesday). I've done only one walk with this group thusfar, but it is my speed.

Same as last Monday Julie, I'll probably be there around 4:30pm and try catching up with the group.
