Professor Greg Johnson offers HIS LAST invisible college: Giambattista Vico's New Science. The class will be six weeks long, and will be devoted to a reading of Italian philosopher Giambattista Vico's New Science. Published in the eighteenth century, the New Science is a pioneering work in philosophical anthropology, the philosophy of culture, the philosophy of history, and the study of mythology. Vico holds a mirror up to humanity, and the purpose of this class is simple: to see what Vico shows us about ourselves. We will also discuss how Vico's New Science had a vast but largely subterranean influence on the subsequent development of philosophy and culture, highlighting his immense influence on James Joyce.
The main text of the class is Vico: The First New Science published by Cambridge University Press
Supplemental book (not required): Mark Lilla's G. B. Vico: The Making of an Anti-Modern
