Stitch and Nerd Out (because who wants to waste time bitching?)

I'm wondering (hopefully) how many among us knit, crochet, embroider, or do some other handwork on a semi regular basis? I think it would be loads of fun to get together for a nerdy stitch and bitch on a fairly regular basis. Locations can revolve around a couple of places, but I would like a set day of the week. Or maybe we could even do like a Wednesday evening and Sunday afternoon to accommodate more schedules. Discuss!

Sorry I won't be able to make it to this one...Ryan decided to give me his cold (who gets a cold in May???), and I just woke up from my 3rd nap this weekend. I'm out for the count but will be practicing my stitches for the next one!

Hi ladies (and Leo). I've decided I'd like to learn knitting or crotchet during these gatherings. Which would you suggest is better for a first-timer to learn?

I have been crotcheting for just over a week and have taught myself two stitches and started my first project tonight. I have a great stitch teaching book that I will bring and YouTube is most helpful. One of the things I like is that when I make a mistake it is super easy to undo my work.

I'm on the knitting side ... I think both are equal in difficulty to learn. Honestly it is going to be a matter of what you want to create. I think garments look nicer when knit as crochet tends to look a bit "chunkier" in yarn weights above fingering. Also crocheting uses more yarn. If you want to make afghans and stuffed animals then I would say start with crochet. They are both fun! There are wonderful vids for both on YouTube aplenty

It is not going to be this sunday, or Mothers Day, but the following.

Effie must have forgotten about this in her grandmommy-ness, hehe. It seemed the consensus of everybody else was to push it back to the following Sunday though.

So we are talking about doing this meet up on Mother's day?

      April 30, 2014

  • Kelly G.

I'm cool with the following Sunday. Thinking of following Leo and investing in some starter stuff but haven't had time to pick it up yet.

It was brought to my attention today that the 2nd Sunday in May ( 5/11) is Mother's Day!

I won't be able to make it this scheduled Sunday. Do y'all want to still meet then or move it to the following weekend?

I thought it was the 2nd Sunday. I have a commitment already on the 4th. I vote for me it to the 2nd Sunday in May.

I've gone and watched a couple youtube vids, got a couple free scarf and hat patterns. Now it's just a matter of actually doing it to learn it and having some kind of reference on hand. A magazine sounds useful to get into the basics.

Practice is the best teacher...but I personally did best watching the vids.

Great idea, I am a lapsed cross stitcher and would live to do this with other people . Not sure about first meeting date will have to check.

The warmer it gets the less likely I am to be inside. This might be something nice to do at Canalside. It's so nice and y'all could sit in the comfy chairs and I could visit and catch the sun!!

    1 · April 2, 2014

    • Effie (Stephanie) M.

I think it's a wee bit early for Canalside, but that can most certainly be an option in another couple months, as can ... Well, heck, the name just went out of my mind. Oh! Larkin Square :)

Love this! I've always got crochet & sewing projects about that I could bring and work on. I can accommodate pretty much any day & time with notice.

I am an avid knitter, but have always wanted to learn to crochet. I work and go to school so time is limited to Friday evenings or weekends. I would love to participate.

I am teaching myself to crochet and would like the opportunity to socialize with others who do needle crafting. As much as I want to do something of the such it would depend on time....due to work and other obligations. Sunday afternoons would not be feasible for me. If it after 6:30 pm during the week I may be able to make it work.

Oh PS - I am even less crafty than nerdy.

    1 · April 2, 2014

I don't know how to do anything but hand-stitch, but I have a heaping pile of mending to do and this would give me a reason to finally do it already! I'm in.

I knit and would be interested in doing something like this! Wednesday evenings generally work for me (but then, so do Sunday afternoons).
