I have been a profile writer for the Daily News in Southern Utah, but not with a formal education in writing. I simply called the editor and told him, "Hey, my dad says I have a knack for writing. Will you give me a shot at working for you?" The man was open to this, so for the next year I wrote a lot, and in the end was offered the cooking column, plus a personal column. How I would have loved to have taken the opportunity! But I felt a gut feeling I shouldn't. I found out shortly after that I was expecting my third baby, and cutting up cilantro moved me to tears in those months... a fine columnist for cooking I would have been. "Hmmm. Let's see. Place two saltine crackers together with a piece of mild, tasteless cheese in the center." It wouldn't have worked, but I am definitely looking to expand my mind and find venues of writing for enjoyment.
Honestly...I'm usually caught in the middle of a self-help book. Awful, awful. As an exception to this, I just read the Hunger Games which I loved, and one of my piano students has made me commit to The Hobbit before it hits the big screen. I love Jane Eyre, and any YA Fiction that has to do with a female heroine without completely dismissing the capabilities of men. (Tough to find.) I also really enjoy reading about cooking, recipes, humor, biographies well-written. My insanely well-read husband would trip if he knew I was considering a fictional club... I can see him saying, "Ha. What would YOU write?" Who knows? Maybe something really, really neat-o!
Hi! I'm Elaine. I am a daily writer, for my personal enjoyment. I've been looking for a while for a writer's club. Who knows? This one might be "the one."
