Welcome to the Summer Sketch group!!
For over 5 years on Meetup.com, and for nearly 15 years before that, We've been offering the best figure drawing events at the most affordable prices, featuring the best models in NYC.
If you enjoy drawing, and you'd like to develop your figure drawing skills is a serious/fun environment with a professional nude art model who is both challenging and inspiring, you've come to the right place. People of any skill level are welcome, and no one will look at your work, or critique you (unless you want to share your work, of course--everyone is welcome to scan their art and post it to the group gallery).
We offer several kinds of art events-- Sunday afternoon figure drawing sessions ("Summer Sketch Sessions," even though they now happen all year long), beginners' classes, and our amazing draw-a-thon and variety show: Draw-mania! We also have occasional social get-togethers and special events. And we can organize private art events for your organization.
We feature a different model at every session, and many of our favorites do come back on a regular basis. The session runs for approximately 3 hours. They typically begin with several very short poses (30 second and one minute long), and gradually work up through 5, 10 and 15 minute poses to our mid-session break. The second portion of the session features 20 minute poses.
Our sessions are offered at several locations around Manhattan. All are easy to get to and near convenient public transportation.
We don't provide art materials, and you're welcome to bring any art materials that you're comfortable with, as long as they don't inconvenience the other artists or damage the surroundings (I dunno--spray paints? Smelly markers?). If you're not sure what to bring, I recommend a pad of about 11x14" and some pressed charcoal sticks (feel free to email me with any questions or suggestions). Newsprint is very inexpensive and great for doing a lot of drawings without breaking your budget (be sure to get thec "rough" texture).
You're going to have great time--relaxing and inspiring, and just a little bit challenging!
This group started over 15 years ago. At that time, there just weren't many sketch groups where people could come and draw on a casual basis except the ones attached to art-schools, and none of those had summer sessions. One summer some friends and I decided to start our own! Over the years we've had different locations, and some years on and others off, but I've kept it going, overall.
Our format is pretty traditional, a reasonably quiet space with one model and timed poses, probably the same structure that's been going at least since the renaissance. (I wonder what they did before stopwatches?)
We are one of the longest running open sketch groups in the city and almost certainly the longest running one of Meetup!! This group made it's Meetup.com debut shortly after Meetup.com first started. We used to be housed at the New York Figure Drawing Meetup page, but through a strange twist of fate, we're now here. If you came to any of our events in years previous and wondered where we went, well, here we are!
Currently we meet at least twice a month during the summer months. In years past, we only ran during the summer months, however this last year the membership wanted to keep the group going, and so we've run all winter. This group is very responsive to the interests of it's members.
There's also a blog, where i occasionally post art-related articles and news. There's you'll find info about artists and some items rdealing wiht art-modeling, too: http://nyfiguredrawing.blogspot.com/
