The Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons

Ever wondered about anatomy or surgery and it's origins?

Not quite your ordinary museum, focused on anatomy and surgery.

The Hunterian Museum collections have been brought together over four centuries by a cast of colourful characters including the surgeon and anatomist John Hunter [masked]). They are a fascinating mix of human and animal anatomy and pathology specimens, wax teaching models, surgical and dental instruments as well as paintings, drawings and sculpture.

Entrance is free and open to all (£3 recommended donation).

Any questions please refer to http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/museums/hunterian/information or ask below.

PS Please consider this is a museum of the Royal College of Surgeons so while it is highly professional it is also potentially unsettling for those of a squeamish or mild disposition (for your sake there are no such images here).

Ben has gone so out of his way to come up with interesting things to do - thanks for making it all so easy for us! A great organiser, with a good sense of humour. Perfect!

It was rather drastic, but i enjoyed it. I will not say here what i found it very funny there, it might be inappropriate ;). Very polite organizer, see you next time. Thank you

    Hey Benjamin,

Are you personally going to guide us through the museum? How long is the tour?

    Thanks!

    March 14, 2014

    • Benjamin H.

Hi Michalis. As this was the first event and the interest was a total shock a tour was not possible to arrange at short notice, but other meetups in the group have guides, instructors and/or self-guided themes (depending on the topic). In other words we will be free to look around the museum at our leisure, as it's relatively small I wouldn't anticipate it being more than an hour or an hour and a half, I will take the group mood and then those who wish to can go to a local cafe for a chinwag.
      Regards

      Hiya,

I don't know if anyone is interested, but if you do have questions while we go through the museum, I have a Master's in bioarchaeology (meaning bones and bodies are my specialty!) I might be able to answer any questions/provide a few fun facts. Nothing too formal, though, I'm afraid. :)

Amazing place. Will you be drawing the fascinating/gruesome medical body displays ?

    March 14, 2014

Personally no, but anyone who wishes to is welcome to.

Sorry I didn't recall saying that I wanted to do this activity as I'm working on that day and I work every other weekend. Will certainly make some events though.

I absolutely love this place, I hope you all enjoy it. I hear the Soanes Museum (I think that's what it's called) on the opposite side of the square is also really good.
