Let's see Nebraska

  • Jan 5, 2014 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Bruce Dern plays an aging alcoholic, who talks his son (played by Will Forte) into a road trip from Montana to Nebraska to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Prize. Directed by Alexander Payne, who previously directed The Descendants, Sideways, About Schmidt and Election.  Please stick around afterwards to discuss this movie in particular and films of quality in general.  A donation of two dollars to defray the quarterly website fee (currently $45) would be appreciated.

Thanks for that counterpoint, Chris. Sorry I missed the after party!

I thought Nebraska had a good deal of depth to its characters. Its slow pace, the distance the camera often kept from the characters (esp. in the beginning) and the occasionally monosyllabic dialogue may have strained the patience of some. The film reminded me of Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise in its bleakness and stark humor, though I use the term humor advisedly, as its undercurrent of despair threatened to overwhelm the narrative. It did end on a relatively upbeat note, for those who crave such things. Thanks to all who showed up and to Kathleen and Betsy for the good conversation at E Street Cafe afterwards.

This is a critical review, as seems to be my nature(!) I found the movie to be shallow and lacking in depth of humanity. The characters were sort of cardboard, and the attempts at humor were stereotyped. I thought it was a shallow, insincere attempt to make a fad movie. I gave it as much time as I could, and I made my departure.

I enjoyed the movie for the scenery and the relationships between the characters and the dissecting of the fathers history and who it moulded him. Did not really notice the B&W cinema after the initial credits

Had to change my RSVP due to a prior commitment -- I thought the status of the movie was "date needed" or something like that -- somehow I missed that it is tomorrow!
