Pizza-palooza @ Aurelio's

A couple of years ago Chicago Magazine came up with list of Chicagoland's 25 best pizzas.  Not places or styles but the best pies at different restaurants.

This will be the start of bi-monthly meetups to try those 24 pizzas, Crust just closed.   The plan is to order the specific pizza from the article and another pie depending on the size of the group.  Plan on at least one meat and one vegetarian pizza to make everyone happy.

First up for Pizza-palooza is Aurelio's for a thin crust pizza with black olives.  South suburbanites love to talk about Aurelio’s old oven, a magical apparatus that supposedly dates back to 1959. People have been asking for their pizzas to be cooked in the old oven for so long that no one knows whether it still exists. (It’s also spawned one of Chicago’s longest-running in-jokes—ordering old-oven-cooked pizzas in every Aurelio’s outpost.) A waitress at the flagship location, a middle-aged lady named Betty, assured customers it does exist, then served a quintessential party-cut pie with sweet plum tomato sauce, a thick cheese blend, and a crunchy yet distinctively filling crust. “Some people like it,” she said, “because it makes the pizzas extra crispy.” You got that right, Betty. The original location in Homewood is a little out of normal area so we'll try the LaGrange location.

After the pizza let's check out the LaGrange Theater and see if there's any good second run movies playing.

You and John can split a piece and move onto the meat pizza!!! I am not sure I am going to like pizza with just olives either, but John made the rules!

You have to try at least one slice to see if it's really one of the top 25.

I grew up on Aurelio's (original location in Homewood). I highly recommend the Super Six be a second pizza for those who love meat. I love all of it.

I'm working on a 10 page paper, so I'm going to pass on the movie. Still looking forward to the pizza.

It was good pizza. Saturday night is not a good night to go though. Too crowded I liked the place and the fact that the turn out was good.
