FFOS Developer Workshop: Web Activities

  • February 18, 2014 · 6:30 PM

Hi folks - we'll be holding our first event of the new year on February 18th at Mozilla's offices in Covent Garden (“Mozspace”).  This will be a technical workshop focusing on a key element of Firefox OS Web App design: Web Activities. How can you build your webapps to take advantage of Web Activities and how can you build webapps that make activities available to other apps? What are some of the best practices in this space?

More info coming soon.

I felt I learnt more than enough about Web Activities to implement them successfully. I'm also happy to have a walk thru of the App Manager.

The only negative was that it was a little slow to start. There could have been time for coding if it'd started on time.

Thanks for the feedback, Paul! We'll try to have a better-defined schedule next time around. Any suggestions on what additional topics we should cover?

Hi Daniel, I can only speak for myself, but I'd like to gain more of an insight into the WebAPI features that are not common in your average browser environment: Anything from Vibration and Battery Status APIs to WebBluetooth and WebPayment.

Hi All, I was looking to make firefox OS app via an existing web app built using Sencha touch (like jquery mobile) but couldn't find anything. Any info would be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Phani.

Any update when would be the next workshop?

I really enjoyed the workshop even with this being my first exposure to FireFoxOS, I've picked up more than enough to get started.

I would like to second what Richard and Paul have said about having more scheduled pauses and starting on time. As this would have helped to smooth out the pace, and enabled the session to be more interactive.

That said, I'm looking forward to the next meetup. :)

Thanks to the organisers, I learned a lot. I'd like to suggest if there could be some scheduled pauses during the walkthrough for people to ask questions and/or catch up. I thought the pace was quite high, although the content was excellent. I would also have liked a note on the etiquette of the drinks/snacks for first-timers like me :)

I like the sound of Play with some devices. :)

@Tahina, @Aziz, even though this will be code oriented, I'm pretty sure that it's gonna be interesting without a laptop. We will have a small talk from Francisco where you can get the basics about Web Activities, and after that you can play with a few devices, or ask any questions interesting for you.

Asking the same as Tahina, don't have my laptop with me.. will this still be useful?

Sadly work commitments strike again :( But I have now got Firefox OS 1.3 on my nightly build and I'm playing with Web Activities (so thanks for that :)

    Hi folks!

We are planning to code in this session, no matter what's your knowledge about Firefox OS, we will like to go through the steps all together.

For that we will need you to come with Firefox Nightly installed in your computer.

Then we will show you how to use the latest application manager and we'll learn how to use web activities and as well, how to define them for other apps use our code.
