ALTON BAY Iceport

  • February 2 · 8:30 AM
  • B18

Alton Bay hopefully will be open. Let's get it on the books! We can alter the date accordingly on wx.

B18 may not be on all GPS's.

This is a rare chance to do an actual ice landing. Alton Bay is on the tip of Lake Winnipesaukee near Laconia. If you want to divert, I'd say go to KLCI, Laconia.

Wheels up at 8:30 a.m.

Preheat if needed....

Conditions were excellent. A little snow on the ice but nothing that was a problem. I went on Jan 24 when conditions seemed good. It was late in the day so I didn't meet any others there. Been trying to do this for years, since I had a Grumman AA-5.

      Fly with me later, Bruce?

Hey Charley, Thank you for the offer but I planned my day around flying out in the AM so an afternoon flight wouldn't have worked. I may just drive out to the big fly-in at Alton on the 17th.

Made it to Alton after all. Very cool. Thanks again Charlie.

      February 2

  • Ed O.

I'm still game I'd there is a seat for an up and comer. Noon, 230 either time works for me. I can be at kfit with 30 minutes notice.

Apparently this will have to stay on my bucket list for now. Hope all that still go have a great time. Safe travels.

    February 2

    • charley v.

Ed, want to go later about noontime?

      February 2

  • charley v.

I'd like to fly up about lunchtime if anyone wants to go with me. I have a couple open seats.

    February 2

  • charley v.

I am without a plane. So will not be going unless an extra seat is available. Some of the others are new to Alton Bay, if you have a seat, offer it up.

Looks like the weather for Saturday has pushed into Sunday. We're going up tomorrow morning in case Sunday gets rained out.

I plan on attending but again, the winds will be my deciding factor. Steve F. will be with me. Mike L.

The Wx looks too iffy for me to be comfortable, even as PAX. Be safe out there if you do fly!

    January 26

  • Peter H.

Would love to go but due to higher winds and having to be home by 11AM, we can't join you. Have fun!

    January 25

  • Bill B.

Forecast is a little to cold and windy for a fabric airplane. Hopefully next time. Bill

Went to work on the plane and couldn't resist the temptation when the wind at LCI was down. Found a direct cross wind but at the surface it was very light, landing was actually easier than one ice covered landing at ORH.

  • Thomas R. W.

We're planning on Sunday afternoon, dependent on winds.

    January 24

  • charley v.

I've changed this from Saturday to Sunday. However, the winds look like a minimum 10+ direct xwnd at Alton Bay for Sunday morning. Might be OK. Go if you wish. Otherwise, I'll post it again next weekend or as soon as possible.

Runway is very nice, slick but easily manageable. Roughest areas were the taxiway which currently alternates between slick ice, snow clumps, and crushed ice.

    January 23

  • Sam A.

I'd like to go if anyone has a seat available.

    January 22

Any word on the condition of the ice? This January thaw can't be good.

I would love to go (PAX) if someone has a seat. Still have never been!
p.s. my email was out of commission for a while (thanks, Comcast) but now I'm back...I missed a few things meanwhile.

As of today, January 4. "...Ice runway not ready yet. 12-13 inches of ice needed trucks to plow runway and parking area. Getting very close. Check back daily..."[masked]-3498. ICAO B18.

Are we doing this Jan. 25th or this Sunday?

    January 3

    • charley v.

Sunday is a maybe, as is the 25th. When its open, you gotta just go cause it might not be open again or often. Its ice and needs to be thick and then plowed. Sundays not looking good wx wise.

Would like to join the group, if there is a seat available.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
