Welcome to the Reston/Herndon Fitness & Activities Group.
This site is intended to be a resource for our members. If you have any ideas, thoughts or feedback, please speak up! Post it on the message board!
There is NO FEE to join this group. Participants in carpools are requested to offer gas money for the driver. We may have activities that will require a fee, such as park entrance fees or sometimes instruction-based meetups, and those can be paid for either at the meetup or through one of the Meetup site payment options, such as PayPal. The payment methods available will be identified in the meetup description.
There is no age limit for members. Members are generally encouraged to bring their children and especially other guests. However, not all events are appropriate for children. Parents should use good judgment as to whether their child is capable of participating. If there are any questions, please contact the organizer of the event. Factors to consider include the age of the child, the type of event and the level of difficulty.
Attendance at events
Most of our events do not have an attendee limit, however if you RSVP "Yes" then please make every effort to attend. If you need to cancel, or find out you will not be attending, then please do so as soon as you are aware of that.
With some events, a minimum number of people are required and with others a maximum. In either of these cases, it is extremely important that you attend if you are a "Yes". I will be starting to enforce a policy whereby members that cancel an event with a minimum or maximum limit without reasonable notice will be removed from the group after doing so twice. However, if you get a replacement, or if someone from the wait list is able to take your place, then there is no penalty. "Reasonable notice" will be at the discretion of the organizer of the event.
Questions involving Profiles and Group Membership:
What should I include on my profile?
1) Please, do not include any personal information, such as your email address or phone number. Our pages are not private, meaning anyone, including phishing sites have access to what you put. You can always receive e-mail via the meetup message system.
2) You do not need to list your last name, in fact we advise against that. However, it is helpful if you use a last initial so we can distinguish John from John! :) If you wish to change your "name" click on the "Account" link in the upper right-hand corner.
3) Please answer the questions you feel comfortable with on your profile.
4) The Profile is for us to get to know you better! Please include a picture and include a brief description about yourself. Remember that any information you enter is public so please use discretion.
Under what circumstances can I be removed from the group?
There are not a lot of rules in the group, however there are four cases whereby a member can be removed from the group:
1) As stated above, failure of two times to attend a meetup that has a minimum or maximun attendee limit for which you replied "Yes".
2) The use of the site for commercial purposes (excluding the posting of an event by our organizers, such as lessons).
3) Behavior at events that is obnoxious, threatening, or extremely disrespectful. You may possibly get a warning, depending on the behavior in question.
4) Inactivity for a year or more. In this case, you are not banned from the group and if you decide to enroll again when your circumstances change, feel free to do so.
Are there guidelines for the Message Board?
The message board is intended to be used as a resource for our community. If you are looking for workout partners, need an extra for a backpacking trip, or just want to do an improptu hike, post it! My only request is that the message board be kept COMMERCIAL FREE. Absolutely no posts will be tolerated by FOR-PROFIT groups, unless it is OKed by me! Any such posts will be subjected to immediate removal of the post and possibly the member. If you are in doubt for a post, please email the organizer separately to check.
Occasionally, you will notice open polls. These are intended to be fun and enjoyable. More importantly, the results assist the organizers in ways to improve the club and event planning! Have you voted?
We are implementing a difficulty scale for our activities. It will appear both in the description (in a different color at the top with details about the activity levels) and possibly the title (surrounded by asterisks). Each activity has a difficulty rating associated with it, in order to give an idea of how difficult the organizer of the activity thinks it is. Of course this is subjective and so you should keep that in mind and feel free to ask specific questions to help you figure out your personal rating for the activity. Some events include more than one level, such as a track walk where you have several options in terms of difficulty, and the ratings will appear separated by commas for discrete values, or a dash to indicate a range. The ratings are:
0 - Meeting only, with little or no activity
1 - Light activity e.g. light walking, few if any hills
2 - Medium activity, e.g. longer walks, maybe some hills, etc.
3 - Moderate activity, e.g. longer walks, hills, a bit of a challenge for the sedentary, maybe a light aerobic workout
4 - Serious activity, e.g. hikes with long hills, noticeable elevation change, heart-pumping, solid workout
5 - Difficult, e.g. boot camps, Old Rag, runs or other high-intensity activities
Don't overdo it!
It is great to be challenged, but please use your best judgment about engaging in any activity. If you have any doubt then please check with your doctor first. The organizers of the meetups are generally not trained to recognize when someone is having a hard time, nor are they necessarily able to help you if you do overextend yourself.
Sometimes meeting up is hard to do!
Sometimes it is because we are comfortable to not get out and meet new people, and sometimes it is because we have trouble finding the meeting place. In the former case, I urge you to make the effort, you will not imagine how much good it will do you and what great people you will meet in the process. In the latter case, please try to remember to take the phone number of the organizer and contact them if you are having trouble finding the place.
Please be prompt to the activities!
Since there are often some no-shows, it is typical to wait only a short time after the scheduled start time to begin. Generally this is only about five minutes. If you are running late, then call and possibly the organizer can either have you meet up somewhere along the route, or wait an extra couple of minutes before starting. Please do not be offended if you can't be accommodated, there may be several variables involved, and the organizer has to take into account the people who are able to make it on time.
This is a non-competitive group of great people. Everyone has their own needs, opinions, and personalities. Please, in any group settings, try to be non-judgmental and supportive. Whatever you give in that regard you will get back tenfold. If you have a great attitude, you will have a great time! Have Fun!
If you have any other questions or comments, please contact the organizer via email.
