Rocky Point/Pinacate Biosphere Reserve

We will leave Thursday afternoon and drive to Organ Pipe National Monument and camp there for the night. On Friday, we will cross into Mexico and drive to Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and (dry) camp there. This is a dirt road so high clearance/4X4 is a good idea. You will need a passport to return to the USA. On Saturday, we will drive to Rocky Point and stay there two nights.  I have reserved "Dream by the Sea" in Las Conchas.  It will be about $45.00 total for each person if we get 12 people.

The water should still be quite warm from the summer...kayaks are good there too. The tide will fluctuate about 10.5 feet between high and low tide. We will drive back home on Columbus Day (Monday).  ~Mark

It was a perfect weekend to visit far southwestern Arizona and northwestern Sonora! We ended up staying in a hotel in Ajo because the Organ Pipe National Monument was closed.
We drove into the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve on Friday and stopped at most of the interpretive signs. We hiked along the rim of El Elegante Crater then drove on to the Tecolote Campground then hiked that crater. The campground did have some picnic tables, trees, and benches. The overnight temperature was very pleasant. We did hear some coyotes in the distance during the night.
On Saturday, we drove over to Sierro Colorado and hiked around the rim. From there we continue the loop through the Biosphere Reserve and then on to Rocky Point. We spent the better part of two days enjoying the beach, kayaking, and just enjoying the great weather and warm water.

On Monday, we played in the water, went shopping down town, and then headed north shortly after noon. We had no issues crossing the border or driving home.
