Free Meteor Crater rim hike w/guide + Little Painted Desert Cnty. Park

  • September 29, 2013 · 7:15 AM

It has been a few years since we did this hike.

Once a year, Meteor Crater gives out free reservations to hike the rim of Meteor Crater and visit the museum free.

I have 6 reservations.

Let me know if you want any.

In a day or two---I will also offer them via FHC's Meetup site---an online bulletin board service paid for by FHC and administered by Deb L. We get a lot of people who come with us w/o knowing that there is really a club.

One person has offered his abode if we ever want a place for a club potluck.

Let me know and I will contact him.

First come/first get for a reservation for the crater walk---with a waiting list kept.

$8 gas money.

Unless we go on through Winslow and take the road to the Hopi Buttes about 6 miles to Little Painted Desert County Park and do a semi loop hike of about 2-3 miles looking at petrified wood that is not as colorful as that in the National Park. Then, $10 gas money.

One year---we even went on to visit the Hopi villages---but, that was a long day.

Let me know if anyone is interested in a full length of Secret Canyon backpack while water is a certainty.

Use the link to see what the Flagstaff Festival of Science offers this year.

Assuming we are meeting at the Walmart, at 2750 S Woodlands Village Blvd. I'll be on a motorcycle. How will I recognize the rest of you? At what part of the parking lot will you be waiting?

it should only take a max of 50 minutes to get to walmart this time of AM so 0600 might be too early

Robert - the writeup, above, states that you have 6 reservations. With my 4, that makes 10. Are your 6 used for the other Meetup group, or is this group able to accommodate 10?

to be clear if you have space; I want to do the 2.5 rim hike and will meet you wherever you want but will need to know what time to meet. would you please tm me after you assemble in the AM if you have enough space for one more? I will be on my way very early and will have intermittent cell service en route. [masked]-5270. Either way I am heading that way to catch sunrise in Little Painted Desert.

Gail - I can only assume that the names immediately below mine, in the RSVP list, have the first dibs on my spots...

Is there a particular spot to meet at Walmart such as front door, or inside, or parking lot ? Thanks

    September 28, 2013

I am leaving for home now and will be out of contact until I am back at a library computer---after the hike. I will show up tommorow---ready to go one either activity. I am still hoping that enough people will not show up by 7:20 that I can go. If anyone arrives after 7:20---they will have missed the boat.

    September 28, 2013

  • herb w.

P.S.,.I will only be going on the crator hike,..so if there also is someone whom needs a ride there and back it would be my pleasure...

    September 28, 2013

  • herb w.

Robert,..I was on initial list for meteor hike,.tho i did not see my name on this list ,so i made another reservation,...unless i here other wise i will be @ walmart @ 7:15 ?

    September 28, 2013

  • Robert B.

Anyone else coming up from Sedona---please contact Jon via this system---to share a ride. I am going home from computer access---back again tommorow.

I am interested in attending the original event should there be space for 1, and will likely drive to the event either way, but would definitely love to hike more than the 1/4 mile that is part of the open house. thanks

    September 26, 2013

    • Robert B.

No. All those interested will show up at W. Walmart and the ten who get slots will be on their way by 7:20. Anyone not there will not get a slot. When you look at the list of names---those closest to my name will get a slot---if they are there. If they show up late----they lose their spot!!!!! They can go on the alternative hike---from the assembly point. The group is supposed to arrive by 8 a.m. and will be on their way by 7:20. The alternate hike is just a consolation prize.

      September 27, 2013

    • Robert B.

You might show up at the Meteor Crater Parking Lot and see if they will let you in. In any case---you could wait 2-3 hours and when they come out---join them with the Little Painted Desert excursion.

      September 27, 2013

  • Robert B.

How does this sound? If too many people show up for the number of reservations---I will lead an alternative hike for those left out. Let me know if there is any interest so I can make plans. I leave computer access by noon Sat. until the NAU Library opens Sunday---so, I must hear from you by noon Sat.

    September 25, 2013

robert curious now am I on the list of 10 as I have to drive from sedona on sunday

      September 27, 2013

    • Robert B.

Looking at the column to the right---you are not standby---you are going if you are there in time!!!! Herb will get my space at FHC, then comes Frank (who has the 4 Flag AG reservations) followed by Laura---then you and then Becca.

I am canceling myself out, since there are others who seem to be more interested than I am. I'll try to make the next one! Have fun!

Here are directions: Little Painted Desert County Park
Enjoy the views and beautiful sunsets from this park, 13 miles northeast of Winslow on AZ 87 (I-40 Exit 257). Facilities include a scenic rim viewpoint overlooking colorful desert hills, a hiking trail, and picnic tables. From the parking area---hike right down in front---go out a ways, then angle right into another drainage for return---you will see a stairway made of old railroad ties--probably dating back to Harvey railroad tours.

    Hello,
Since I am not familiar with Flagstaff, I am not sure where the alternative hike is in relation to the Little Painted Desert County Park. Will there be an alternative hike? and if so where will it start? I will be travelling from Chinle (northeast of Flag). thanks, gail

Hi Jon. Since this was an easy 3 mile hike---I was thinking of a moderate---go in as far as you wish---hike into Pumphouse Wash. About a dozen miles south on I-17---then 3 miles dirt road---then 1/2 mi. on a trail into PHW---then, go as far as anyone wishes. 3/4 mi. to the prettiest 100 yards---but, wading is required. Let me know if you are interested?

I have cancelled myself and guest out. It sounds like there are more people more interested in going than me. Enjoy the hike.

Hi Frank. First I listed the hike at the Meetup for Flagstaff Hiking Club. It was slow to fill so I also listed at Flagstaff AG. The next time I checked FHC---all 6 places were taken---so, I was grateful when you got another 4 places. But---the list kept growing. We won't know who can go until we see who shows up. I can give up my spot and lead an alternative hike for excess people?

    September 25, 2013

  • Jon

IF there is the spot available I am seriously interested

I was able to reserve four (4) spots, so there is room for three more... Non AZ residents must go to the Flagstaff Visitor Center to obtain a pass, in order to attend for free.

    • John S.

I called on Friday or Saturday and the response was there were no more reservations.

Am interested in this event if it includes the rim hike. Do I need to make my own reservation for that? Thanks

    September 14, 2013

  • Robert B.

Thank you Frank W. I hope at least one more. person will get reservations. This hike is also posted at Flagstaff Hiking Club's Meetup site. If everyone signed up---shows up---as unlikely as that may be---someone might get left. Since it looks as if we will have 2-3 cars---we can have at least one carload have the option of not going on to Little Painted Desert Cnty Park.

Robert, Is the FHC hike on Sunday or Monday? Their schedule has it on Monday, Sept. 30.

      September 11, 2013

    • Robert B.

Apparently---they have revised it: Sunday, Sept. 29
      Meteor Crater Open House
      8 a.m. – 5 p.m., I-40, 43 miles east of Flagstaff to Exit 233
This 50,000-year-old crash site is Earth’s best-preserved meteor impact crater. Explore interactive displays or take a ½-mile guided rim tour on a paved trail. A 2½–mile guided rim tour requires reservations and participants must be at least 12 years old. For reservations call[masked]

    September 6, 2013
