The old, pre-Dave Miller-loop

  • Dec 28, 2013 · 8:30 AM

We have not been hiking from Vulte Arch Road much because that 4.8 mile dirt road drive has gotten so rough---few people are willing to drive it---especially, all the way out to the end.

Donna has volunteered her truck.

We could do the 4.2 mile hike up Bear Sign/Dry Creek trails, up to a ledge, above a dry waterfall for lunch---then, past Narrow Canyon and down to Vulte Arch Trail.

But, we're not---this time!

Instead, we start out the same way---get to within half a mile of the Dave Miller crossover---and, take the old crossover---much more scenic and shorter!!!!!! The entire hike would be 3.5 miles IF we do a shuttle---which would require a second vehicle---which, I doubt we will get!

Or, the driver could go get the car!

Or, we could put a bicycle in the back of the truck---hide it in the bushes near Secret Canyon T.H., and have someone bike the one mile to get Donna's truck!

If we get more people than can fit in the passenger part of Donna's truck---they can ride in the back---either all the way---or, just the dirt road---coming down in comfort in a passenger car.

Gas: $8 if you ride all the way with Donna, $6 to the passenger car driver to the dirt road + $2 to Donna if you ride in the back of her truck 5 miles to the T. H.

I would rate the hike 80% timewise/20% moderate. By distance, only about 5% is moderate. That 5% is rising up to the crossover.

Optional: Going an extra distance beyond the crossover, you can reach Alcove Arch, about 2-300 yards off the trail.

This Saturday, 8:30 a.m., lowest (S.E.) corner of the W. Walmart parking lot.

I think I may be able to arrange for a hiker who was quoted in the current BACKPACKER magazine to come along.

I am looking into having a guest speaker on this hike---quoted in the current issue of BACKPACKER magazine.

I live in Sedona. Could I meet up at the parking area off of dry creek rd. for this hike?

I am leaving computer access in the early afternoon. Any questions after that will have to be answered AFTER the hike. RB

Robert, I'd better not go tomorrow. Yesterday I did Cibola Pass Tr. to Soldiers Pass Tr. to Brin's Mesa Tr. loop (which, btw, was exactly 5 miles) and my new-ish boots really did bad things to my left foot. I'm not sure what the problem is but I have a lot of post-hike pain. And, I was awfully slow. Really sorry to back out at the last minute, but I think it's the wise thing to do. Have fun!

Bob - I have a truck that will make it if a few people are willing to ride in the back of the truck to the shuttle car. The truck is a 91 chevy diesel, extra cab (SMALL back seat - one or 2 people max) (They will need to hold dogs in place in the back also.) Dogs will ride with us down - no shuttle space. Will that help?

That could be of great help. Thank you.

What about accessing the Vultee Arch Trail from Oak Creek Canyon via the Sterling Pass Trail. No bumpy dirt roads that way.

We are not doing the Vulte Arch Trail this time. We are doing the Bear Sign/Dry Creek to the old crossover to Secret Canyon. Next time we are in this area---we will do the trail that includes Vulte Arch Trail---and your suggestion would be good exc. some of us are at the age where we can't hike as many miles per day as we used to do. Thank you!!!!
