Lorena is organizing a cleanup day to benefit the Southside Community Garden, and we need your help. The Garden is a place where Flagstaff residents can pay a small yearly fee to be given a plot of land to grow organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Their fee covers water use for irrigation and nothing else- the Garden is maintained entirely by volunteer efforts.
Now that the snow has melted, there is a good deal of debris that needs to be cleared from the Garden (located at San Francisco and DuPont, just a block north of campus). On Saturday, May 4th, we'll be bagging this debris so that it can be picked up by the City of Flagstaff. There is some weeding to be done, a wooden sign that needs a new coat of varnish, and some of the plots need to be redefined (moving rocks that outline the plots). No gardening experience is necessary, just a willingness to help out a great cause and a cool initiative.
We encourage you to invite your friends- it'll be a fun time of hanging out off campus and giving back to the community. Take a break from stressing out about finals to get some fresh air. It shouldn't take long, especially if we have a lot of people show up to help. Since the garden is open the community, it is sometimes abused and there are empty bottles and things like that. Let's do our part to make up for the less responsible members of our community.
If you are able to bring work/utility gloves, rakes, pruners, or loppers, that would be tremendously helpful.
The garden is located next to ) El Charro Cafe. It is about a 5 minute walk from the NAU HLC- just head north on San Francisco.
Thank you in advance for coming out to help.
