A day on in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The Flagstaff community is coming together on January 20th, Martin Luther King Jr. Day to honor the legacy of service and social advocacy embodied by Dr. King. This year will see a new level of community collaboration.
In northern Arizona the NAU Black Student Union (BSU) has 27 year history of championing the observance of this day. Defying Former Governor Meacham, who had rescinded the holiday his first act in office, the BSU garnered support of other community leaders and of the NAU President to have the day recognized on campus.
The BSU's observances this year, which include a march on campus and a program at the Dubious Center. are being joined this year with a new community collaboration. The Flagstaff Freethinkers are organizing an event with several groups in Flagstaff to organize an MLK day of service, multi-organizational event with several projects that will bring together a broad and diverse coalition from the Flagstaff community - culminating in a march to campus to join with the one led by the BSU.
On the morning of January 20th, volunteers will gather at the Murdoch Center at 7:45 AM for the kickoff and to find a project they want to participate in. People who want to get involved but can't make it that early can go by the Murdoch Center throughout the day to find an event that still needs help.
