Religion Exploration for Skeptics

First we are starting with a familiarization with the bible and discussion around the chapters we read. Later we want to get to speakers and comparison religions etc. See below.

*Note: Please read Genesis Chapters 25-35 before the next meeting and come with any questions or comments. (It's primarily the story of Jacob)*

We'll start by discussing the chapters we've read, then perhaps watch a video clip, read a highlight, or focus on a key concept.

For anyone who is not familiar with the bible or would like some discussion around story's within it we are starting with that.

We'll look at what many of the Christian majority quote, and what the meanings and passages around those quotes mean. This can be a way to become better informed and perhaps understand why people hold on so strongly to their various belief systems. We can go through the Skeptics bible as well and see where that leads the conversation.

What we're hoping to accomplish:

An exploration of faith based mythologies. Example of discussions we might have regarding various religions: What are their core beliefs? How are they similar or different from each other? Why do humans continue belief systems as they do?

If there is enough interest I thought we could invite various religious leaders to come speak to us on occasion about their beliefs in a Q and A session. Just a few I was thinking of exploring would be:

Jehovah's Witnesses

Native American religions

We could invite others of course, and if we did get through what we want of the bible, we could explore other texts.

Any suggestions and ideas are greatly appreciated. I'll continue to repeat the meetup as long as there's interest.
