HELP NEEDED for ROCKAWAY BEACH RESIDENTS

family displaced due to hurricane Sandy. If anybody can help, please drop them into the Aisling Center before 7pm Also, we are taking donations of specific items - towels (gently used/new), socks, diapers (all sizes), black garbage bags and bottled water for victims of hurricane Sandy in Rockaway Beach presently living in shelters. If you drop your donations into the Aisling Center, we will deliver the donated items to the shelter by Tuesday. God Bless you for all your time and dedication, we are all pulling together with truck loads of supplies.... Liffey Lines is great with all their trucks, The Roses and myself have volunteered and have two more loads to bring down Monday and Wed. If anyone needs to send anything from Orange Co. down, we can arrange a pick up.... also Caitlin Burke Maloney our 2005 NY Rose from Pearl River has organized the fund drive below... my heart goes out to all in this devastation...... heart-wrenching site to see, may we count our blessings and pray for all those in need.... You are one of our Angels.. thank you, thank you, we need more people like you

The Office of Emergency Management has specifically requested NOT DONATE INDIVIDUAL CLOTHES or misc items unless you personally know of a specific organization that can handle it. Donating $$$ to buy bulk supplies is logistically easier for organizations to handle, instead of time consuming for orgs to sort miscellaneous individual items, making sure food safe, clothes clean, etc. (But if a specific agency is willing to accept those donations, then give it directly to them.)

I need a weekday (tomorrow morning) to get drop off points for clothes, unless you already know them. Also, drop off points for food. Who wants to do what? We now have 120 people willing to help! (You are all amazing!) I would like to get groups of people to work together to accomplish one thing and then use your i-phone or android to video it. We will make a compilation video of all of us...

Is there a downtown restaurant/bar that we can meet at tomorrow? One that needs our business? Can we all agree to meet at 7:00 to share out the duties? I have some ideas on how to reach out to everyone on our list.

    1 · November 4, 2012

I can't get downtown till about 8pm, but I will get there if you think the meeting will still be happening. I know where Walkers is -- If that doesn't work, South's is on Church and White St. (http://www.southsnyc....)

If you are able to donate any of the above items, we would kindly accept them from Noon - 6pm, seven days a week. Please bring or ship to Coney Island USA, 1208 Surf Ave. Brooklyn NY 11224. How many videographers do we have here? If we can find enough people to take videos, we could make a combined video, sort of like Matt Dancing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgNaozZkwCQ. We could collect coats and then do the Matt dance (video taped), distribute food and video the Matt dance, collect money, etc. etc. What do you think?

When will the flashmob for hurricane sandy relief be, and where will it be held? (If known)

    1 · November 4, 2012

  • Maggie L.

Svetlana - there are no steps yet... If you haven't already, register on www.flashmobamerica.com. Once this gets organized you'll get an e-mail about it, and you can register for the event. Later, you'll get another e-mail with choreography videos - that's how you'll learn the steps. There's usually an extended rehearsal before the event so if you don't have the steps down by then, they'll go over it with you there.

    1 · November 4, 2012

    • Susan R.

There is no choreography! This is not done by LA, so nothing is on the website. This is just us -- NY and NJ -- banding together to make an impact.

      Greetings East Coast Organizers,
The Meetup community is already scheduling relief Meetups in the form of resource-sharing, ride-sharing, blood drives, fundraising for the Red Cross, collecting donations and volunteering for clean up efforts in hard hit areas.
      What can you do?
Schedule a Relief Meetup. Talk to your members about how your Meetup Group can help each other and your community.
From the start, Meetup has been about neighbors coming together to unleash good things together. Be safe and take care of each other.

Corcoran on 125 7th ave is hosting a drive in bk. They said they are in need of cleaning supplies, soap, blankets sheets, shampoo, lotion, ie. They explained they are over whelmed with clothing but will find a place for it. We went there to drop off today.. This may be a very good connection for other locations in need as they have people taking clothing and other necessities to locations.

This is from the Huffington Post: A Desperate Plea For Winter Clothes
The owners of New Jersey's NJ Skateshop are desperately trying to collect winter clothes for neighbors without heat and members of their community who were left homeless by Hurricane Sandy, as a Nor'easter is forecast to hit the stricken area next week.

Co-owner Chris Nieratko reports two of the shop's four stores have electricity and have been stocked with power strips to allow residents to charge their phones and "pretend things were normal if only for a while." But many are ill-equipped to handle the incoming storm, he writes, and are already struggling: "Seeing your children cold and hungry is a feeling I never want any of you to experience."

Nieratko is asking for shipments of any winter clothing to the store's New Brunswick location, from which they will distribute to people in need:

    November 3, 2012

    • Susan R.

I have no TV so I don't know what you're hearing on the news, but let me tell you, it's bad. Very bad..we've opened to the door to anyone with children. For days we ran generators sparingly because there was no gas...
There's another storm coming. Temperatures are dropping. Things are getting colder and even scarier. I am writing to you to ask for your help in clothing the displaced, homeless, under-dressed skaters in our community and their families...If you have anything warm (socks, sweatshirts, jackets, beanies, gloves, shoes, tees, ANYTHING) doesn't matter if it's 5 seasons ago...there are many in need from very young to very big XXL. Anything you can spare to help people stay warm will be appreciated.
Please send whatever you're able to (and there's no box too small) to our New Brunswick shop:
      NJ TWO 29-B Easton Ave
      New Brunswick, NJ 08901
      Label the box HURRICANE RELIEF
