This is awesome! Sounds like the St. Augustine event is in full swing! I will stay on the County Attorney's butt until I actually get to speak with him personally and make sure he and I are on the same page. I will be calling WJXT channel 4 out of Jacksonville tomorrow to see if they will cover the story also. Although I've never heard of having to hire a Deputy for law enforcement services. Isn't that why I and the rest of the property owners in St. Johns County pay taxes for?

    Awesome!!!

I'll send out the overall press release tonight.

If the department says that it would like to send an officer accept but don't request a deputy. You just want to make sure the department issues a memo to its officers explaining the law so that you do not get hassled.

Contacted the Sheriff's Office to arrange to have a deputy on the site while we are there to handle any calls that come in and they said we would have to hire a deputy at $33.00 an hour with a 2 hour minimum. Sean have you ever heard of this and did Port Orange charge you for having their Officer present at the Causeway Pier? This doesn't sound right to me.

County Attorney's Office contacted! Mr. McCormack is out of the office until friday so I left a message and will try him back on friday. Gonna contact the sheriff for a deputy to be on the premesis the day of the event.

Alrighty I will call our County Attorney Patrick F. McCormack tomorrow morning and get the ball rolling on this. Would it also be a good idea to call the Sheriff's Office and request that a Deputy Sheriff be on the premesis during the event to handle any complaints or calls due to the event? I have Attorney McCormacks contact information and am ready to go with it.

IF they tell you that there is a county ordinance that prohibits you from open carrying while fishing bring up FL Statute[masked] that preempts ALL firearms laws in the state and renders the county or city law null and void.

You need to call the county attorney's office Tell them that a small group of you will be "openly carrying holstered handguns while fishing at the Usina boat ramp pier on Nov 6th." and you would like the county attorney's office to "make sure the local Police officers and Sheriff deputies understands the provisions of Florida Statute[masked])(h) that allows you to open carry while fishing and going to and from the fishing area."

Ok Sean can you tell me who I need to get ahold of County Attorney, Sheriff's Office ect? I can go ahead and make the calls tomorrow.

I think we should start there with a venue that will be an easier sell to the county. Go with the boar ramp this month and graduate to the big pier next month.

I agree C&J. Let's get this rolling. After hearing of the different fishing areas I am gonna stick with my recommendation of the Vilano Pier at 260 Vilano Road. Lemme know if that's good for you and I'll make the calls that need to be made if you wanna do the gun shop notification and stuff. Lemme know my friend and let's do this!

From what I can see, the Lighthouse Park Boat Ramp is public and owned by St. Johns County also. Does anyone know what the foot traffic is like through there? I'm up for all ideas if it gets us some exposure.

As far as I can see, the Vilano Pier is a public fishing pier as listed on the St. Johns County Website at http://www.co.st-johns.fl.us/BCC/Parks_1_Recreation/Fishing_Pier/index.aspx The address for the pier is 260 Vilano Road St. Augustine, FL 32084

In my opinion, we would be best served to use the Vilano Pier if we won't be using the St. Johns County Pier. If we can get a location worked out this evening, I'd be glad to make a few calls tomorrow to the County Attorney, our local newspaper The St. Augustine Record, and WJXT Channel 4 in Jacksonville. Sean I defer to your expertise and welcome any guidance that you can provide.

Ok are we talking about having the event at the Usina Boat Ramp or the Vilano Pier? I just checked and the Vilano Pier is owned by St. Johns County also and it is free to fish there. My concern is like what C&J Crowson said about there being only one person on the pier when they went there. I know we definately want the exposure and the Vilano Pier should have a pretty good amount of people there on a Saturday morning.

The St. Johns County Pier is a "toll pier" owned by the county. For purposes of gaining acceptance by the county attorney, the boat ramp pier will be an easier sell. The big pier will have better exposure but I fear that the county may resist. I would recommend holding your first event at the boat ramp and then holding one in December on the St. Johns County Pier.

I would be more than happy to assist with organizing the event and doing some of the footwork. I have some great contact here in the St. Augustine area that I think would be beneficial to us. Lemme know if I can help.

If I may make a suggestion.... The St. Johns County Pier on Beach Boulevard would be the best place in this county to hold an event. It may cost a couple dollars to fish, but the small cost is worth it. There is alot of foot traffic through that pier and that is what we are aiming for is exposure and education of the public. Plus the SJC pier is easy to find.

Before you contact anyone contact me. We have spoke to a lot of county and city governments and may know who will be helpful and who will fight you.

    October 10, 2010

Once you have determined the location you call the city or county attorney, not the PD or Sheriff.

The attorney's office will put you in contact with the proper law enforcement officers to make sure the entire department is properly trained.

[masked])(h) is the statute that allows for unlicensed open carry while fishing or going to and from.
[masked] preempts all firearms laws in the state. Therefore all city and county ordinances regarding firearms are null and void.

Bobby Lingold is also in St. Augustine. Both of you should get together to get this planned.

I'm pretty sure that the Vilano Beach Pier is private property. If so you will need to get permission from owners ahead of time to make sure you are not asked to leave.

Usually we try to find fishing areas in city or county parks and boat ramps.

The Usina Boat Ramp at 611 Euclid Avenue in Vilano/North Beach is public property but I'm not sure how easy it is to find.

Would you be able to do it on Sat November 6th?
