Shoot the Moon at

the Pier in St. Petersburg

Possibly for the very last time!

Every month we'll photograph the moonrise from a unique location that provides great compositional elements such as bridges, skylines, and other prominent features.

This month will be a little different.  The moonrise is a little over 15 minutes before sunset.  The moon will be about the brightness of the sky, so HDR and/or multiple exposures and exposure blending may be required.  I'll be happy to provide instruction and help with all your settings.  A tripod will be a big help tonight, but not mandatory. We'll have yachts from the marina and basin in the foreground as well as the Pier.  I've never shot from here, but it looks interesting on paper :-)

The actual moonrise is 8:06 PM, so allow time to pay your meter, move gear get setup etc.  The location to shoot from is the grass and sand on the Northeast side of the Bayshore.  You can bring chairs, coolers for water etc. I look forward to seeing everyone shoot the moon this evening ;)

We'll do a social activity afterwards at one of the nearby restaurants.

Please park along Beach Dr. and Bayshore, so bring change, for the meters (or use iPhone App).  They enforce the meters, so don't forget to pay.

This location is very wide open and I may be forced to cancel if severe weather threatens before or during the PhotoWalk.  I'll announce any cancelation via the comments section below and I'll email all RSVPd members.

Communications was good. Unfortunately, we can't control the clouds. I ended up at spa beach

Jeff's weather forecast encouraged me to attend even though it had been raining here for hours. As a new transplant, got to see a new location, a super moon and chat with great folks. Nice to see such a large turnout.

The super moon was the star of the night...
    Mysteriously hiding on the horizon...
Late and just showing up a few minutes before hiding in the clouds
Thanks Jeff for insisting with the weather and giving us this opportunity to take these nice shots

A beautiful moon after all! Great to be out meeting the FCCP photographers. Heavy foot traffic, but it was great fun to be in a lively area.

Anyone travelling from Clearwater, please advise on the best route to take. US 19 or 275?? Any other choices? Thank you!

have reconsidered, it doesn't look like we will see the moon at all, again, :-( and that is really what I wanted to get. Although we did get some beautiful sunset shots last month, I'm going to pass on this one now. I'm not at all familiar with St. Pete, so it doesn't make sense for me to drive for 35-40+ minutes in an area I don't know, possibly without being able to shoot anything. I hope all who go are rewarded with something wonderful to shoot. Have a good time! Right now, at almost 6:30, we're still having thunder and darker clouds are moving in again, but it could be all sunny in St. Pete by this time! Florida weather! :)

    See you there!

There are a few showers going through at this time (4 PM) however, this is predicted to pass and it should be good weather tonight.

  • Jeff D.

The rain is expected to move through the area in the next hour. The skies are predicted to be partly cloudy. This could obscure the moonrise. However, the sunrise could be spectacular after the rains if some clouds remain.

If you're traveling a great distance you may want to re-think this, but I will be at the event tonight.

Just an update for the FCCP photographers attending tonight's PhotoWalk to shoot the Super Moon from Straub Park. I'll be monitoring the weather, but so far it looks very good with only a 15% chance of rain tonight. If this changes and severe weather threatens, I'll send an email and post notice of the cancellation on the FCCP website. The cancellation, if necessary, will be made no later than 2 hours before the start of the walk. Clouds can also be an issue and if present along the horizon, they can obscure the moon rising. The forecast is for mostly clear skies, but this could change and effect our ability to photograph the moon.

This is a rare year. We have three super moons in a row, July, August and September. So if you miss this one, there is still one we'll do in September.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
